KINGSTON, Rhode Island – Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, New Jersey) went 2-3 with a pair of singles on a blustery day at Bill Beck Field on the University of Rhode Island campus as the Rams defeated the Bobcats, 1-0, in a game where neither offense could get much going because of the wind.
With a wind blowing steadily in from centerfield, the Rams posted a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and it held until the end of the game.
Donaghue led the Bobcats with his two hits while Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pennsylvania) went 1-3 with a single and a walk. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York), Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) and Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) each recorded a single as they all went 1-4 in the contest. Palladino also added his third stolen base of the season in the top of the fifth inning.
Freshman Charlie Murray (Charlton, Massachusetts) made his first career start for the Bobcats as the lefthander lasted four innings in the outing where he allowed one run on three hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Fellow freshman Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Connecticut) came on in relief and pitched 3.1 scoreless innings allowing five hits with two runs and a strikeout. Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) struck out both batters he faced in .2 innings.
Tim Caputo walked to lead off the game and with one out, Derek Gardella singled just through the right side of the infield to allow Caputo to go first to third and put himself in scoring position. Clean-up hitter Mike Corin singled to left to bring home Caputo for the only RBI of the game. With just one out and the bases loaded, Rhode Island had a chance to blow open the game early but Murray struck out Chris Hess and forced Nick DeRegis to pop up an end the inning.
Quinnipiac loaded up the bases in the top of the fourth inning but could not bring home a run. Iannotti reach with one out on an error by the second base before Donaghue laid down a bunt single down the third base line. After Dale Long (Saratoga Springs, New York) struck out, Ruditys walked on five pitches to load the bases.
The Bobcats open up conference play this weekend when they travel down to Jersey City, New Jersey to take on the Saint Peter's Peacocks at Caven Field in a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 21 at 12 P.M. and a single-game on Sunday, March 22 at 12 P.M.
