NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team dropped the middle game of its weekend series at Lipscomb on Saturday, as the Bobcats fell short by a final score of 9-4 at Dugan Field in Nashville.
After a quiet day at the dish in the opener, Quinnipiac found life offensively in game two. The Bobcats scored in four different innings and scattered seven hits on the day – but failed to strike in bunches like the Bison managed to do. Lipscomb did its damage with four runs in the fifth inning, and held on for its 10th win of the season (10-5).
Quinnipiac's Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Conn.) led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for the Bobcats. He has now reached base in 12 straight games, a career high for the junior catcher, while going 4-for-8 in the series thus far. He had a day off in the field and served as the designated hitter.
Senior Dale Long (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) joined Iannotti with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) each had a hit, with Guglietti's triple plating Palladino in the fifth inning.
QU opened the scoring summary in the second inning, when Long drove in Iannotti with an RBI single. The Bobcats doubled its lead soon after as Palladino's sacrifice fly pushed Matthew Payero (Corona, N.Y.) across in the ensuing inning.
The Bison got on the board in the bottom of the third with back-to-back homeruns by Mike Korte and Adam Lee, but Quinnipiac answered in the top of the fourth. Long and Iannotti produced again for the Bobcats, as Long's infield single scored Iannotti from third to give the visitors a 3-2 advantage.
The lead was short-lived however, as Lipscomb regained the advantage with two more in the fourth before extending its lead in the fifth. After a leadoff walk, Allan Hooker lined a triple down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3, and Hunter Hanks scored him with a sacrifice fly to put the Bison in front, 4-3.
Guglietti's triple tied the game again, 4-4, but Lipscomb broke the game open with four runs in the fifth. Each of the first three batters reached in the inning, which was followed by a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly for an 8-4 lead. Lipscomb tacked on one more in the eighth.
The Bison were led by Adam Lee, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Three others had two hits on the day and Lipscomb collected 12 as a team. Nick Andros secured the win, allowing four runs on six hits over six innings of work. Kyle Weller came on in relief, giving up one hit in three innings for the save.
Robert Hitt (Suffield, Conn.) was charged with the loss, giving up eight runs on eight hits in five innings. Gregory Egan (Seldon, N.Y.) and Mike Davis (Sandy Hook, Conn.) closed out the game, allowing one run on four hits.
Quinnipiac and Lipscomb wrap up the three-game set tomorrow, Sunday, March 15 at 2 p.m.
