
QU Baseball Drops Final Game to James Madison 9-6, Split First Series of 2015 Season

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Quinnipiac Baseball team's bats continued to stay hot for the third consecutive game, but the Bobcats fell to the James Madison Dukes, 9-6, in the final game of a four-game series to split the series with the Dukes.
Just one day after picking head coach John Delaney's first career victories, the Bobcats completed a series split in his first series as a head coach.
The Bobcats scored 22 runs in the four game series with the Dukes, its most runs in a series since scoring 23 runs in a three game series with the Saint Peter's Peacocks on April 19-20, 2014.
Quinnipiac dropped to 2-2 this season with the loss to James Madison on Sunday while James Madison improves to 4-4 with the weekend split.
Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Connecticut) went 2-4 with two runs, a RBI, and a walk while Lou Iannotti (North Haven, Connecticut) went 2-4 with a triple, two runs, a RBI and a walk to lead the Quinnipiac offense. Iannotti led the Bobcats with six hits and two extra base hits this weekend while Guglietti led the team with six runs scored.
Mike Palladino (Rockville Centre, New York) drove in two RBI with a single on the day while Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, New Jersey) and Julius Saporito (Manalapan, New Jersey) each drove in an RBI in the loss. The RBI for Saporito was the first of his career.
Starting pitcher Wyatt Hamilton (Falmouth, Massachusetts) made the first start of his career for the Bobcats and took the loss. He tossed four innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. He struck out two batters in each of the third and fourth innings. Taylor Luciani (Berlin, Connecticut) made the first appearance of his career, going three innings allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and a strikeout and Matthew Lorenzetti (Marlboro, New Jersey) pitched the final inning in relief.
For the third consecutive game, the Bobcats scored a run in the top of the first inning. Matthew Batten (Shelton, Connecticut) reached on a fielder's choice that eliminated Matthew Payero (Corona, New York) from the bases after a one-out single. Batten then stole second base, followed by an RBI single to centerfield off Guglietti's bat to put the Bobcats up 1-0.
James Madison scored seven unanswered runs from the second through the fourth innings before Quinnipiac got two back in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Dukes' lead to 7-3. Guglietti walked on four straight pitches to lead off the inning and came around to score on a 0-1 count when Iannotti belted a triple to centerfield. With Donaghue at the dish and a 1-2 count, he pulled a single to left field to bring home Iannotti from third base.
The Dukes responded once again with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give them a 9-3 lead before the Bobcats doubled their run total in the top of the eighth inning to bring them within 9-6. Guglietti and Iannotti reached on back-to-back singles to lead off the inning before Anthony Cruz (Burlington, Massachusetts) walked to load the bases. Saporito stepped into the box with two outs and was hit by a pitch to bring home Guglietti from third base and keep the bases loaded. On a 1-0 count, Palladino singled to centerfield which allowed Iannotti and Cruz to score the final runs of the game.
Quinnipiac will begin a trip Nashville, Tennessee on Friday, March 6 when they will face the Belmont Bruins at 5 P.M. EST (4 P.M. CST) at E.S. Rose Park on the campus of Belmont University. The Bobcats will face the Bruins twice and the Bradley Braves twice on the weekend before facing the defending national champion Vanderbilt Commodores on March 10 and 11 at 7:30 P.M. EDT (6:30 P.M. CDT) at Hawkins Field. The spring break trip ends with a three game series at the Lipscomb Bisons from March 15-17 at Dugan Field.
