HAMDEN, Connecticut – The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team mounted a furious comeback on Saturday afternoon that fell just short as the Bobcats dropped a non-conference showdown against Binghamton, 11-8, from the QU Lacrosse Turf Field in Hamden. Quinnipiac's loss drops the Bobcats to 0-3 on the season while Binghamton captures their first victory, moving to 1-1 on the year.
Trailing 9-2 at the half and by as many as eight goals in the second half, something started to click as the Bobcats showed some fight and clawed their way back into this game. The Quinnipiac run started with an impressive performance from Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) who rattled off three straight goals to push the home squad back into contention.
After Binghamton answered with a tally, the Bobcats had the home crowd energized with three more goals all in a matter of four minutes to make it 11-8 with more than 13 minutes remaining. A balanced attack led the second QU charge as Leah Walter (Londonderry, New Hampshire) found the back of the net for just the third time in her career while Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, New York) scored first and then assisted on an Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) marker that closed the gap to just three.
Even with the rush, the Bobcats still had more work to do in trying to fight off what was a dominating first half from the Bearcats highlighted by a 5-0 run to end the stanza. Quinnipiac picked up the ensuing draw control and but a costly turnover only started what was a recurring trend to end the game.
The Bobcats had several chances to continue the furious comeback but six turnovers in a span of 13+ minutes to end the game proved costly as Binghamton held on to a game that was controlled by Quinnipiac throughout a majority of the second half.
"We failed to play for 60 minutes today," said Quinnipiac head coach Danie Caro. "That was the difference between almost coming back and what could have been the chance to compete to win the game."
DeVito matched her career-high with five points (three goals, two assists) on the afternoon. Her five-point game matched her output against Canisius on April 6 from last season where she finished with two goals and three assists. DeVito's big game against the Bearcats did, in fact, go down as the junior attack's first career hat trick.
Devito was one of five Bobcats that finished with multi-point games as Carey (two goals, one assist) recorded three on the afternoon while Walter, Ochwat and Devin Kelly (Miller Place, New York) each finished with one goal and one assist.
"It was nice to see our junior class step up and produce for us today," Caro said. "Katie made some really good plays on offense for us and Leah was our best defender all day."
For Carey, the two-point night was the eighth multi-point game of her career and the fourth three-point game for the junior attack. Walter, meanwhile, tallied the first multi-point game of her young career as the junior defender found herself all over the field in this back-and-forth matchup with Binghamton. With four career points to her name in 24 career games coming into today, Walter had herself a day, picking up her first goal and assist of the season.
Ochwat continues to move up the all-time record list at Quinnipiac as she now has 122 career goals, tied with Devon Gibney '12 for fourth place in QU women's lacrosse history. She also tied with Marta Waldron '02 for seventh place in program history as both Bobcats currently stand with 45 career assists. The multi-point game for Ochwat also ups her streak to 12 straight games with at least two points.
Another Bobcat that enjoyed a career day was Kelly who finished with her first goal and assist of the season on her way to the first multi-point game of her career.
On the defensive end, Vicki Kuhn (East Hampstead, New Hampshire) and Carey led the charge with a game-high four ground balls each. Walter, Carey and Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) each recorded two caused turnovers while Kayla Murphy (Garden City, New York) teamed up with Babstock and combined for nine draw controls.
Samantha Tilts (Port Washington, New York) put together a good string of saves in the second half as she tallied three saves on five shots while Kyle Larkin (Holbrook New York) recorded five saves on 14 shots in her first half action.
Quinnipiac will resume action on Wednesday, March 4 as the Bobcats search for their first win of the season at home against the UConn Huskies. Play is set to begin at 3:00 PM from the QU Lacrosse Turf Field.
"Connecticut is a great team, so we will face a tough battle on Wednesday," Caro said. "We'll be focusing on playing for 60 minutes and trying to achieve some consistency in our level of execution."
