HAMDEN, Connecticut – Three Bobcats registered at least three points but the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team was defeated by in-state rival UConn, 18-8, on Wednesday afternoon from the QU Lacrosse Turf Field. Junior Kathleen DeVito (Glastonbury, Connecticut) tallied her second straight hat trick while Kyra Ochwat (Farmingdale, New York) finished with four points, prolonging her streak to 13 straight games with at least two points.
Ochwat's four points (three goals, one assist) made some history as she ups her career total to 171 points (125 goals, 46 assists). Her 125 goals are now tied with Marta Waldron '02 (125) for second place on the all-time list at Quinnipiac while she ranks fourth all-time in career points and tied for sixth in career assists.
DeVito was all over the turf with three goals, two ground balls and two draw controls at her attack position. Through four games in 2015, DeVito is trailing only Ochwat for the team-lead in points with 10 (seven goals, three assists) which is already just six away from matching her single-game career bests established last season as a sophomore.
Another highly active Bobcat was junior midfielder Aileen Carey (Long Beach, New York) who posted three points (one goal, two assists) with four draw controls and two ground balls. Carey's four draw controls represent the second-most for Carey in a single-game in her career (33 games played).
Kayla Murphy (Garden City, New York) tallied her first career goal to round out the scoring for Quinnipiac while Briana Fountain (Marshfield, Massachusetts), Kelly Babstock (Mississauga, Ontario) and Devin Kelly (Miller Place, New York) each posted one assist in the Wednesday night in-state matchup.
Among the defensive core, Carly Knowles (Garden City, New York) led the way with two caused turnovers to go along with one ground ball. Kiera Kelly (West Islip, New York) posted three ground balls and one caused turnovers and Murphy added two draw controls and two ground balls to round out her impressive showing against regional power UConn.
Despite the 10-goal deficit, Quinnipaic controlled the action for over 30 minutes of play against BIG EAST foe UConn. After falling behind 13-2 towards the end of the first half, the Bobcats outscored the Huskies, 6-5, for the remaining 32:46 of play.
Murphy started the second half surge with her first career goal with 52 seconds remaining in the first half. After UConn rattled off three straight goals to make it 16-3, Quinnipiac dug their feet in and scored five of the next seven goals throughout the second half.
Carey scurried through the teeth of the UConn defensive zone and rifled a strike past UConn goalkeeper Marya Fratoni to put an end to the Husky run.
Later in the half, Quinnipiac held UConn scoreless for over 14 minutes while the Bobcats rattled off a 4-0 run highlighted by two goals each from DeVito and Ochwat to bring the gap back under 10 goals before UConn finished off the 18-8 victory.
One key aspect of the game that helped decide the outcome was the 31 turnovers committed by the Bobcats. Quinnipiac did force 29 UConn turnovers on the defensive end and outshot the Huskies 10-6 throughout the second half but 31 turnovers for the game (17 in the first half) gave their in-state rival too many extra looks at the net.
The Huskies were led by Kelsey Catalano who tallied a game-high five goals while Carly Palmucci (two goals, four assists) and Jacqueline Jordan (three goals, three assist) each led the way with six points apiece for UConn.
Quinnipiac begins a daunting stretch as the Bobcats hit the road for six straight road games and eight of nine overall to be played away from home. The road swing begins with a Sunday matchup at Hofstra with play set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
