
Chelsea Laden Secures ECAC Women's Hockey Single-Season Shutout Record, 50th Career Victory in 7-0 Rout of Princeton

HAMDEN, Conn. – Goaltender Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) picked up her 15th shutout of the season to set the new ECAC Women's Hockey record for shutouts in a single-season in the No. 3 seed Quinnipiac women's ice hockey's 6-0 rout of the No. 6 seed Princeton Tigers Friday afternoon in Game One of the ECAC Quarterfinals.
Laden also picked up her 50th career victory, becoming just the second Bobcat to reach the mark. She trails former goaltender Victoria Vigilanti by three, as Vigilanti won 53 games during her career from 2009-13.
Heading into the game, Laden was tied with former Clarkson goaltender Erica Howe with 14 shutouts prior to blanking the Tigers in the first game of the playoffs. Laden also moved into sole possession of second place in the NCAA Women's hockey record books, only trailing former Minnesota goaltender Noora Räty who posted 17 shutouts in the 2012-13 season.
Laden finished the contest with 13 saves on all 13 shots she faced.
The Bobcats take a 1-0 lead in the Best-of-Three game series with the Tigers and improve their record to 25-7-3 (15-5-2 ECAC Hockey) while the Tigers drop to 15-13-2 (13-8-1 ECAC Hockey).
Offensively, the Bobcats scored seven goals for the first time this season, scoring their most goals in a playoff game in Quinnipiac women's ice hockey history. It was the most goals for the Bobcats since scoring eight in an 8-0 win over RIT on Nov. 29, 2013.
Quinnipiac also recorded 44 shots, as the Bobcats hit the 40-shot total for the second consecutive game and ninth time this season. Quinnipiac outshot Princeton 44-13, including 17-2 in the second period.
In the first period alone, the Bobcats scored four goals which was their most goals in a period since scoring six goals in the second period against RIT in that 8-0 win, and most goals in a first period since Oct. 31, 2009 when they scored four against Rensselaer.
11 different Bobcats registered a point in the rout, including four players with two points. Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) led the way with two goals, her third multi-goal game this season and first multi-goal game since recording a hat trick against Yale on Jan. 10. Cianfarano now has a team-high 17 goals and 29 points this season.
Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario) and Emma Woods (Burford, Ontario) each netted a goal and an assist for the Bobcats, as Connery set a new career-high for assists in a single season with 14 and her 12th goal. Woods now has 10 goals and 11 assists.
Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) and Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) each moved closer to the 100 point club as Kosta assisted Uden Johansson's goal in the first period. It was Uden Johansson's 10th goal of the season to give her 96 career points while Kosta tallied her 16th assist of the season and 98th point of her career.
Danielle Marmer (Dorset, Vermont) picked up the first two assists of her career Friday night as the sophomore assisted goals by Cianfarano and Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan). It was also Marmer's first career two-point game.
Darkangelo added a goal early in the third period for her 10th of the season and 20th point.
Lindsey West (Ajax, Ontario) netted her fourth goal of the season as she recorded the first 10-point season of her career on the goal. Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) recorded her 15th assist of the season while Kristen Tamberg (North Toronto, Ontario) and Nicole Brown (Oshawa, Ontario) also picked up their 12 assists of the season.
Despite allowing seven goals, Princeton goaltender Kimberly Newell still made 37 saves in the loss.
Woods put the Bobcats up 1-0 just 6:04 into the game and they didn't look back. She controlled the puck on the far sideboards and passed it into the corner for Brown. Woods kept going down the boards and Brown found her with a backhand pass. Woods skated the puck behind the net, circled the net and flung the puck on net where it deflected off a Princeton skate and into the back of the net.
Quinnipiac took a 2-0 under three minutes later on Cianfarano's first goal of the game. Marmer gathered the puck in the defensive zone and passed it to a skating Connery into the neutral zone. Connery skated the puck along the far boards and fired a centering pass to Cianfarano streaking through the slot. Cianfarano stuck her stick out and re-directed it past Newell.
West gave the Bobcats a 3-0 lead with 4:44 remaining in the first period with a snipe from the left point. Woods passed the puck from the right faceoff circle to Tamberg at the right point who quickly shifted the puck to West at the left point. West collected the puck a fired it on goal where it found the back of the net passed Newell's glove side.
Just over a minute later, Uden Johansson gave the Bobcats a 4-0 lead with a power play goal. After working the puck around the offensive zone, Uden Johansson rocketed a shot from the right wing that went wide. The rebound caromed off the end boards to Kosta, who fired a pass across the ice back to Uden Johansson. Off the pass, Uden Johansson blasted a one-timer high glove side past Newell.
Early in the second period, Cianfarano added her second goal of the game 3:32 into the period. Cianfarano collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and skated into the offensive zone. At the faceoff dot on the left side, Cianfarano toe-dragged and twirled the puck from her forehand to her back hand to get around the defender before roofing a shot past Newell to make it 5-0 Bobcats.
Darkangelo got into the scoring action 6:35 into the third period to give Quinnipiac a 6-0 lead. Darkangelo fired a shot from the right faceoff circle but it was saved by Newell. The rebound kicked out to Marmer who tapped the puck back to Darkangelo skating in on net to tuck it home.
With 57 seconds remaining in the game, Connery gave the Bobcats their 7-0 lead and final. Morgan Fritz-Ward blocked a Princeton shot in the defensive end and the puck ricocheted to Connery, who skated the puck from the defensive to the offensive zone. Connery put the puck on her backhand and skated in on Newell where she flicked it past Newell's glove for the goal.
The Bobcats and Tigers return to the ice for Game Two of the Best-of-Three game series Saturday afternoon at 3 P.M. at High Point Solutions Arena.
