NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team fell 3-0 to the Yale Bulldogs in the second to last game of the regular season Friday night at Ingalls Rink.
Quinnipiac could not make the most of its shots as the Bobcats outshot the Bulldogs 37-20 in the contest, including 27-10 in the final two periods after tying the shot total 10-10 in the first period.
With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 23-7-3 (14-5-2 ECAC Hockey) on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 14-13-1 (11-10-0 ECAC Hockey).
Jaimie Leonoff made save after save between the pipes for Yale as she stood on her head in the 37 save shutout. It was the most saves she had recorded in a shutout this season and the third most saves in any game in 2014-15 for Leonoff.
Krista Yip-Chuck scored two goals for the Bulldogs while Hanna Aström factored into all three goals with one goal and two assists. Yip-Chuck's two goals now gives her 10 on the season and 20 points while Aström tallied her 11th, 12th and 13th points on the season with her sixth goal and seventh assist.
Phoebe Staenz, Kate Martini and Gretchen Tarrant each also tallied assists for Yale in the victory over Quinnipiac. Staenz picked up her 16th assist of the season while Martini tallied her ninth assist and Tarrant notched her fifth.
Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) made 17 saves in goal for Quinnipiac on the 20 Yale shots.
Yip-Chuck gave Yale a 1-0 lead with seven minutes to play in the first period when Hannah Aström skated through the slot and her shot was saved by Laden. The rebound kicked out to Yip-Chuck waiting at the bottom of the right faceoff circle to put the puck past Laden's glove for the rebound goal.
Yale took a 2-0 lead late in the second period on Yip-Chuck's second goal of the game. Staenz skated the puck along the boards behind the Quinnipiac goal when she lost control of the puck. Aström collected the puck and passed it between her legs back to Staenz where she passed the puck to Yip-Chuck on top of the crease to one-time tap the puck past Laden.
Aström tallied the Bulldogs third goal of the game 4:09 into the third period when Kate Martini dropped the pass off for her in the offensive zone. Aström fired one shot on Laden which she knocked down but the rebound kicked right out to Aström and she buried the second shot for the goal.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday afternoon when they finish up the regular season against the Brown Bears at Meehan Auditorium in Providence, Rhode Island with puck drop set for 4 P.M. Quinnipiac needs either a tie or a win over Brown to secure home-ice in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Women's Hockey playoffs.
