HAMDEN, Conn. – Former Quinnipiac men's basketball standout Ike Azotam has enjoyed an impressive start to his professional basketball career, and was recently recognized as the LEB Silver Player of the Week, announced on Feb. 17, 2015.
In September, Azotam signed with Marin Peixegalego of Spanish LEB Silver League – the second division of the Spanish basketball league system behind the ACB. Azotam is off and running, helping the team to an 11-8 record thus far, currently sitting in sixth place in the league standings.
Last week, Azotam had a game-high 15 points while adding nine rebounds and four assists in the team's upset win over the league's top ranked team, Castello. Azotam has turned into Marin's best player, leading the team in scoring (14.1), rebounding (6.7), field goal percentage (54.9) and minutes per game (27.9). He is averaging over 12 points and six rebounds per game during the team's current three-game winning streak.
One of the great basketball players to come through Quinnipiac, Azotam reached accomplishments that very few have been able to do. Azotam became Quinnipiac's Division I leader in rebounding, surpassing Justin Rutty's total in his very last game. He had 1,605 career points and 1,043 career rebounds, ranking him 12th all-time in scoring and third in rebounding. Azotam also had 99 blocked shots, one away from becoming the fourth Division I player to obtain 100 career blocks. Azotam's 44 career double-doubles serve as the program's highest total since joining Division I. He was tabbed First Team All-MAAC in his final Bobcat season.
Azotam is back in action on Sunday, Feb. 22 as the team goes for a fourth straight win. Fans can follow Azotam for the remainder of the season by visiting www.basketball.eurobasket.com.
