
Cydney Roesler Nets Game-Winning Power Play Goal for No. 5/5 QU Women's Ice Hockey in 1-0 Win over No. 8/9 Clarkson

Potsdam, New York – Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) blasted home the game-winning power play goal for the No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team with 2:35 remaining in regulation as the Bobcats defeated the No. 8/9 Clarkson Golden Knights 1-0 Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena.
Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) won the faceoff in the offensive zone back to Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) on the right wing. Uden Johansson shifted the puck to Roesler at the point before Roesler passed back to Uden Johansson. Passing up a shot, Uden Johansson passed the puck back to Roesler at the point where she rocketed a shot low past Shea Tiley's right side for the game-winning power play goal.
With the victory, the Bobcats set new program records by recording their 23rd victory of the season and 14th conference victory of the season. Previously, the Bobcats had recorded 22 wins two other times before this season and 13 conference wins just one other time.
Quinnipiac also defeated Clarkson for the third time this season, and second time by a 1-0 margin. The Bobcats previously beat Clarkson 1-0 on Nov. 21 and 3-1 on Nov. 29 in the Nutmeg Classic Championship game. It is the first three game winning streak for the Bobcats against the Golden Knights in program history.
The power play goal was Roesler's seventh goal of the season and her 13th point. It was Roesler's first goal since Jan. 9 against Brown. Uden Johansson recorded a new career high with her 15th assist of the season and tallied her 24th point. Uden Johansson also moved closer to the 100 point club, as the assist with her 95th point of her career.
Sydney Rossman (Excelsior, Minnesota) made just her second start of the season in goal for the Bobcats and earned her first shutout of the season. The shutout was also Rossman's second of her career, with the first coming in an 8-0 win over RIT on Nov. 29, 2013.
The sophomore goaltender made several key saves for the Bobcats to keep it scoreless up until Roesler's game-winning goal. Rossman made 14 saves in the victory for the Bobcats as she picked up her first win to improve her record to 1-0-1.
Clarkson nearly netted the game-winning goal with just over 14 minutes remaining in the third period as Shannon MacAulay backhanded a shot in the slot on goal. Rossman was sliding to her left, but stretched out her right left to make the kick save and keep the game in a scoreless tie.
The defense for the Bobcats held one of the NCAA's top offenses in check all night long with great defensive pressure. Heading into the contest, Clarkson averaged 32.4 shots per game but Quinnipiac held them to just 14 shots. The Bobcats doubled up the Golden Knights shot total, outshooting them 28-14 in the contest.
Quinnipiac's record improved to 23-6-3 (14-4-2 ECAC Hockey) with the victory while Clarkson dropped to 20-9-3 (14-4-2 ECAC Hockey). The Bobcats are just one point away from clinching home ice in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Tournament with the victory over Clarkson, and St. Lawrence and Cornell each losing on Saturday.
Both teams had numerous power play opportunities but neither could capitalize until Roesler's goal. The Bobcats finished the game 1-4 on the power play while the Golden Knights were 0-4. Clarkson could not even get a shot off with the man advantage while Quinnipiac got five shots on power play.
Quinnipiac will return to action for the final weekend of the regular season with a trip to Ingalls Rink to take on the Yale Bulldogs on Friday, Feb. 20 at 7 P.M. following by the regular season finale at Meehan Auditorium to face the Brown Bulldogs on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 4 P.M.
