QU's Seven Victories Sets a New Single-Meet Program Record
STATEN ISLAND, New York – A month-long break is about the only thing that could slow down the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team as the Bobcats totaled a single-meet program record seven event victories on Friday at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout. Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) and Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) each picked up two individual victorious while Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) factored heavily in the 400m to lead the Bobcats on the day.
"It was another great day for us," said Quinnipiac head coach Carolyn Martin. "We had some huge personal records on the day and the entire staff is very excited for the rest of the season."
In just her second season, Lee only cemented herself as the top hurdler in program history as she picked up the victory in the 60m hurdles, the third such 60m hurdles title of her young career. Lee's time of 8.70 seconds not only broke her own program record but she also legged out a field of 21 other competitors to score. Her strong day continued in the 200m as she picked up another victory, placing first out of a field of 29 runners. Lee's time of 25.89 seconds is a new personal-best in the 200m while the victory is the first of her career in the sprint event.
Coming off what was a sensational debut last week, Timpson followed up with an even more impressive showing in her second appearance as a Bobcat. The high school sensation out of Rhode Island added to her already impressive resume, scoring a pair of victories in her signature high jump and weight throw events. Timpson, the two-time Rhode Island State Champion in the high jump, tallied a 1.65m performance on Friday to pick up her second straight high jump victory to start her collegiate career. Later in the day, Timpson added her second victory on the day with a throw of 15.37m in the weight throw to beat out a field of 14.
Samuels appears to be in mid-season form already as her dominance in the 400m was on full display at Wagner on Friday as she earned her first victory of the season in the individual event. Samuels' time of 55.48 seconds was a full 1.80 seconds faster than the runner-up while the victory is the sixth of her career in the 400m.
The 2015 MAAC Indoor Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Year Samuels continued to leave her mark on the day as she combined with Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York), Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) and Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) to take the 4x400m relay victory. The four Bobcats combined to finish with a time of 3:51.97 which stands as the fifth-fastest in program history.
The seventh and final individual victory on the day came off the feet of Cori Reid (Old Saybrook, Connecticut) in the 800m. Reid's time of 2:22.62 earned her the top spot among a field of 26 runners as she also earned the first individual event victory of her career.
Several other impressive marks on the day came from the shot put tandem of Mackenzie Merkel (Hillsdale, New Jersey) and Jenny Mears (Vernon, Connecticut). Merkel finished second overall in the event with a new program record of 12.02m while Mears improved significantly from her first career appearance last week, throwing a new personal-best of 10.42m to place ninth out of 22 on Friday.
Running in her first career one mile event, Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) performed well as she took third place out of 16 runners with a time of 5:23.87. Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) took her second straight runner-up finish in the long jump to start the season as she jumped 5.17m to take second place out of 11 competitors.
Quinnipiac's depth in the sprint events shined as three Bobcats placed in the Top 10 of the 60m dash while four placed Top 10 in the 200m. Alea Simons (3rd; 7.84), Jacque (4th; 7.86) and Bonnie Pisciotta (7th; 8.01) all placed in the 60m while Lee (1st; 25.89), Pfrommer (5th; 26.51), Simons (7th; 26.63) and Nadia Jarvis (10th; 26.73) each placed in the 200m.
The Bobcats will now take the new month off as the next competition falls on Jan. 16, 2016 at the Great Dane Invitational.
