Bobcat Sophomore Class Accounts for 19 of Bobcats' 26 Total Points
STATEN ISLAND, New York – In what was the first action in more than a month for the Quinnipiac women's indoor track and field team, Jessica Lee (Montgomery, New Jersey) shined with a program record 60m hurdle run to lead the Bobcats to an 8th place finish out of 26 teams at the 11th annual Great Dane Classic.
Racing for the first time after taking home her first career MAAC Runner of the Week honor back on December 15, Lee showed no signs of rust coming back from winter break with her record-breaking performance. Racing in a stacked field of 72 runners, Lee advanced from the preliminary stage with the third-fastest time (8.69 seconds) for all collegiate entries. She followed that up with a program record time of 8.66 seconds in the 60m hurdles finals to take 3rd place as well as the fastest time for all underclassmen in the competition. Combined with her 60m hurdles performance at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout (8.70 seconds), Lee has finished with a new program record in her signature event in back-to-back meets.
Moving into the middle distance events, sophomore Kaleigh Roberts (Higganum, Connecticut) completely dominated the one mile event as she placed 2nd overall among all collegiate performers on the day. Roberts' time of 5:01.37 is a new personal-best for Roberts as she inched ever closer to becoming the seventh Bobcat in program history to run a sub-five minute mile.
Another standout performer from the Bobcats' sophomore class Emily Wolff (Highlands Ranch, Colorado) was very impressive in the 3000m as she took 4th place to earn five points for Quinnipiac in the team standings. Wolff crossed the line with a time of 10:01.76 to continue what was a great day for the sophomore class who combined to score 19 of the Bobcats' 26 total points on the day.
More points came from senior Shameal Samuels (Hartford, Connecticut) as she clocked in with a time of 25.08 seconds in the 200m to place 11th overall and sixth-fastest among collegiate runners in the event. Sophomore Leah Pfrommer (Killingworth, Connecticut) wrapped up the scoring on the day for the Bobcats in the long jump as she posted a performance of 5.44m to claim 9th overall and fifth-best among collegiate performers.
Several other strong contributors included senior Tracy Campbell (Wall Township, New Jersey) who just missed placing in the 3000m as she placed 10th overall out of 39 runners with a new personal-best time of 10:22.67. Francine Jacque (Port-au-Prince, Haiti) was the leading sprinter for the Bobcats on the day as she clocked in at 7.80 seconds in the 60m dash to place 23rd overall out of 103 (13th-best collegiate runner). Alyson Caron (Andover, New Jersey) came less than half a second from establishing a new personal-best as she clocked in at 1:17.55 in the 500m to place 21st overall (15th-best collegiate runner). Carly Timpson (Narragansett, Rhode Island) was two spots away from placing in the weight throw as she tallied 15.71m to place 10th overall out of 37 in the event.
Quinnipiac's top 4x400m relay team in the competition performed well with a time of 3:56.23 as the group including Jacque, Samuels, Kristen Ulrich (Clark, New Jersey) and Nia Baker (Brooklyn, New York) placed 11th overall out of 42 teams.
A quick turnaround now looms for Quinnipiac as the Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, January 22 with the Gotham Cup at the Ocean Breeze Complex in Staten Island.
