HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac volleyball team battled through a tight match with Iona all the way through on its Senior Day, but the Gaels pulled out the third and fourth sets by the minimum two-point margin and captured a 3-1 win over the Bobcats on Saturday afternoon at Burt Kahn Gymnasium.
Set scores were 25-18, 23-25, 26-24, 25-23 in Iona's favor, as the Gaels improved to 10-19 overall and 7-10 in the MAAC with the win. Quinnipiac, which honored senior Chandler Thornton (Arlington, Texas) before the match (ceremony pictured), falls to 3-27 overall and 1-16 in the MAAC with the loss.
Junior Katie Urycki (Chesterton, Ind.) led the Bobcats with 13 kills, while Thornton had 12 of the Bobcats' 59 team digs on her Senior Day. Junior setter Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Ind.) led Quinnipiac in digs (15) and assists (35), but it was not enough to offset a big day from Iona's Claire Archibald, who had 25 kills and 22 digs.
The Bobcats were close to forcing a fifth and final set by pulling ahead 23-21 in the fourth on a Urycki kill to cap off a 3-0 run. Iona, though, responded behind Amanda Gannon, who had three of her team's four kills in a closing 4-0 run, including the one on decisive match point for a 25-23 win. Gannon finished the match with 13 kills, ranking second on the Gaels behind Archibald.
Quinnipiac used a pair of late comebacks in the second and third sets, taking the second set 25-23 and falling a close 26-24 decision in the third. Iona won the first set 25-18 and seemed poised to take a 2-0 lead with a late 23-21 advantage of the third. However, sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Ind.) had a kill, and after an Iona error, then combined on a block with freshman Jen Coffey (Merrimack, N.H.) to give the Bobcats a 24-23 lead. Ogden then capped off the set when she had a kill straight off a dig from sophomore Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, Calif.).
The Bobcats had a furious rally in the third set to come back from 23-18 down to level the score 24-24. Freshman Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pa.) had an ace to make it 23-20, and Kloos and Urycki followed with kills to make it 23-22. After Iona earned the next point, Miller had a kill to fight off one set point and an Iona made the score 24-24. However, Gannon and Archibald had the next two kills to give the Gaels the 26-24 win in the pivotal third set.
Iona ended up having its best offensive set in the fourth, hitting at a .316 clip as a team, with 16 kills in 38 attempts. Urycki had six of her 13 kills in the fourth set, while Archibald had six in the fourth for the Gaels. Gannon had all three of her fourth-set kills in the final 4-0 run to cap off the match.
Quinnipiac is back in action tomorrow when it concludes the 2015-16 season with a home match against Manhattan, beginning at 1 p.m.
