BOBCATS WRAP-UP REGULAR SEASON
The Quinnipiac women's volleyball team caps off the regular season this weekend with two home conference matches. On Saturday, November 14, the Bobcats welcome the Iona Gaels to Burt Kahn Court for a 1 p.m. contest. The following day, the Manhattan Jaspers will visit Hamden for a 1 p.m. showdown.
SENIOR SATURDAY
The Bobcats' MAAC match against Iona is also slated to be Senior Day for Quinnipiac as one senior class member – Chandler Thornton – will be honored prior to the start of play.
ALL-TIME AGAINST IONA
The Bobcats enter Saturday's matchup looking for their first all-time victory against the Gaels. After falling three times to Iona in 2014, and once earlier this season, Quinnipiac dropped to 0-12 in their history against the Gaels. Iona overtook QU in five sets in Hamden before a three set win late in the year at the Hynes Center. The Gaels the handed the Bobcats their final loss of the year in 2015 MAAC Tournament, 3-2. Earlier this year, Iona swept the Bobcats in New Rochelle, 19-25, 23-25, 23-25. Katie Urycki recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs against the Gaels.
THE GAELS
Iona comes to Quinnipiac with a 9-19 overall record and 6-10 in conference action. The Gaels have MAAC wins over Niagara (3-0), Rider (3-1), Quinnipiac (3-0), Fairfield (3-2) and Siena (3-1). Iona is 1-4 in their last five matches, most recently falling to the Manhattan Jaspers in three sets in Riverdale, New York. Freshman Claire Archibald leads the offensive attack with 323 kills on the season. Archibald ranks fifth in the MAAC, averaging 3.31 kills per set.
ALL-TIME AGAINST MANHATTAN
Quinnipiac's lone win in seven tries against the Jaspers came in 2001, with the Bobcats taking the decisive fifth set at home. Last season, Manhattan captured two four set victories over the Bobcats including an early season win in Hamden. Earlier this season the Jaspers swept QU at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, New York (16-25, 10-25, 19-25). Jen Coffey led the Bobcats with 10 kills while Kat Miller added a double-double, posting 21 assists and 13 digs.
SCOUTING THE JASPERS
Manhattan is currently sitting in fourth place in the MAAC with an 11-5 conference record and 18-12 overall. The Jaspers rank just behind Siena (12-4), Fairfield (11-4) and Marist (12-5) with two conference matches to go. Before coming to Burt Kahn Court, Manhattan will travel to Fairfield on Saturday. The Jaspers won four of their last five matches including victories over Rider, Siena, NJIT and Iona. Their one loss in the stretch came in five sets to Marist. Junior Ivana Kostic ranks fourth in the conference with a .304 hittinge percentage while leading the league with 1.13 blocks per set. Senior setter Jade Gray sits at second in the MAAC in assists, averaging 9.86 per set.
LAST TIME OUT
Last weekend, the Bobcats traveled to New Jersey for matches against Rider and Saint Peter's. Quinnipiac tied the match against Rider with a second set victory, but ultimately fell, 3-1 (22-25, 25-15, 17-25, 14-25). Against the Peacocks, the Bobcats dropped the first two sets but came to back to win the third. Saint Peter's took the fourth set for a 3-1 win, (21-25, 22-25, 25-12, 24-26).
SEASON HIGHS
Against Saint Peter's, junior Emma Ogden posted her second double-double of the season. Ogden recorded a season-highs with 28 assists and 16 digs in the match.
MAAC ATTACK
Elizabeth Kloos ranks seventh in the conference in overall hitting percentage, hitting at a .275 clip in MAAC action. Kloos is also fourth in the MAAC in blocks, averaging 0.95 per set.
FRESHMAN LEADER
Kat Miller leads the Bobcats through 29 matches in assists, digs and double-doubles. The freshman has 453 assists, averaging a team-high 4.19 per set to go along with 267 digs. Miller's seven double-doubles leads the squad while she also ranks third in total blocks (68) and kills (159).
DAWSON'S STREAK
Sophomore Sierra Dawson led Quinnipiac with 19 assists in two straight Bobcat matches. She ranks second on the team with 226 assists, averaging 2.46 per set. In the third frame against Siena, Dawson recorded 13 assists.
CAREER KILLING
Against the UMass Lowell River Hawks, freshman Jen Coffey smashed a career high 18 kills to lead the Bobcats to victory. Coffey's previous career high was 13 which she achieved twice earlier this season.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
In the win against UMass Lowell, both Kat Miller and Sierra Dawson recorded double-doubles. Miller tallied 27 assists and 11 digs in her team-leading seventh double-double of the season. Dawson posted 19 assists and 11 digs to register her first double-double of the season.
DIGGING FOR DEFENSE
Against UMass Lowell, five different Bobcats recorded double-digit digs as Quinnipiac totaled 78 in the match. Senior Chandler Thornton led QU with 19 digs followed by 13 from junior Emma Ogden. Kat Miller, Sierra Dawson and Cody Michaels each added 11 digs against the River Hawks.
FAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS
Freshman Kat Miller had a day to remember early this season at the UMass Lowell Invitational. On her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team, Miller displayed her versatility on the court, posting a combined 64 assists, 22 digs, 15 total blocks and 10 kills through two games. Against San Jose State, the freshman nearly recorded a triple-double, tallying 29 assists, 10 digs and nine blocks. She followed up that performance with another double-double against the host school. In the second game Miller registered 35 assists, 11 digs and six blocks.
MILLER TIME
In the second matchup with UMass Lowell, Miller recorded her seventh double-double of the season. In the match at Manhattan, she led the Bobcats in assists with 21 and in digs, tallying 13. Earlier in the season the freshman posted four consecutive double-doubles.
KLOOS LETS LOOSE
Elizabeth Kloos tallied eight kills in three straight matches with hitting percentages of .471, .375 and .350. Earlier this season, the sophomore recorded 18 total blocks in two combined matches. She leads the team with 103 on the year including 19 solo and 84 assisted. She ranks fourth in the MAAC averaging 0.95 blocks per set.
WE WILL, WE WILL BLOCK YOU
Quinnipiac leads the MAAC with a 2.08 blocks per set average in overall statistics. They have 209.5 total blocks which include 49 solo blocks and 351 assisted. Kloos leads QU with 103 blocks while sophomore Sam Alechko has 81 and freshman Kat Miller adds 68 to the total.
COFFEY ON THE GRIND
With the 18 kills against UMass Lowell, freshman outside hitter Jen Coffey tallied at least 10 kills in six of the eight matches. In two straight matches she led QU with 13 kills. Against Saint Peter's, Coffey tallied a career high 13 kills on 35 attacks. The freshman hit at a .257 clip while adding one block and two digs. She matched that total against Marist on 23 swings with a .304 hitting percentage. Coffey leads the squad with a 2.69 kills per set average and is 10th in the league with a 2.79 average in conference play.
FAMILIAR FOE
With the win over Saint Peter's, the Bobcats secured their first MAAC win in nearly two years. Quinnipiac's last conference victory came on November 3, 2013 in Jersey City when they took down the Peacocks in five sets.
HITTING THEIR STRIDE
The Bobcats played some of their best volleyball of the year in the second set against Saint Peter's. Quinnipiac captured a huge, 25-7 win in the frame. The Bobcats went on 8-0, 6-0 and 5-0 runs in the victory while recording zero errors and a .562 hitting percentage.
COMEBACK KIDS
In the third set against Saint Peter's, the Bobcats came from behind multiple times to take a 2-1 lead in the match. Down 16-9, Quinnipiac went on a 10-2 run to take a one point lead with the help of five Bobcat slams and a Miller service ace. The Peacocks rebounded with six straight points to go up, 24-19 and needed just one more point for the victory. Quinnipiac answered with their best play of the day, the Bobcats shutout the Peacocks while rallying off seven consecutive points for the win.
