LOWELL, Mass. – Freshman Jen Coffey (Merrimack, New Hampshire) led the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team with a career-high 18 kills as the Bobcats defeated UMass Lowell in five sets (18-25, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 17-15) on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats captured a bit of revenge after falling to the River Hawks in five sets earlier this year. With the result, Quinnipiac improved to 3-20 (2-10 MAAC) on the season while UMass Lowell dropped to 4-19 (1-5 America East).
Several Bobcats made huge contributions for Quinnipiac in the victory as the team posted 54 kills and 11 total blocks. With 18 kills, Coffey has now posted double-digit kills in six of the last eight contests. Sophomore Elizabeth Kloos (Munster, Indiana) recorded 12 kills on just 22 swings for a .409 hitting percentage. Kloos also added seven digs and a team-high seven blocks on the day. Sophomore Jamie Termotto (Smithtown, New York) was the third Bobcat with double-digit kills, registering 10.
Both freshman setter Kat Miller (Collegeville, Pennsylvania) and sophomore Sierra Dawson (Larkspur, California) recorded double-doubles in the match. Miller tallied a team-high 27 assists to go along with 11 digs and five blocks in her second double-double in the last three contests. Dawson added 19 assists and 11 digs for her first double-double of the year.
Junior Emma Ogden (Crown Point, Indiana) posted 13 digs and four blocks while classmate Cody Michaels (Versailles, Kentucky) added 11 digs. Senior Chandler Thornton
(Arlington, Texas) led the Bobcats with 19 digs.
Quinnipiac fell behind early in the match after the River Hawks took the opening set, 25-18. After taking a 2-0 advantage, UMass Lowell held onto the lead for the remainder of the set. A four point run in the middle of the frame gave the River Hawks a 10 point lead, too much for the Bobcats to overcome.
Quinnipiac bounced back to win the next two sets and take a 2-1 lead in the match. In the second frame, the Bobcats came back from an early six point deficit to tie the game at 12-12. Down 21-19, QU scored five straight points for their own three point lead. Miller's smash ended the frame to tie the match at one set apiece.
The Bobcats played their best set of the match in the third game, recording 15 kills on 32 attacks for a .375 hitting percentage. Down just one at 12-13, Quinnipiac went on a 9-2 run to basically put the game away. Coffey led QU with four smashes in that stretch.
After UMass Lowell won the fourth set and tied the match at 2-2, it all came down to a fifth deciding set to 15. The River Hawks scored two points late in the set to tie the final frame at 12-12. The Bobcats scored back-to-back points, needing just one more to secure the victory. UMass Lowell answered to tie the game two more times at 14 and 15 all. After a River Hawk attack error, Termotto closed out the win with her 10th slam of the day.
The Bobcats resume MAAC action at home on Wednesday, October 28. Quinnipiac will welcome the Siena Saints to Burt Kahn Court for a 7 p.m. contest.
