ECAC Weekly Awards
Taylar Cianfarano earned her third ECAC Hockey Women's Rookie of the Week Award on Tuesday, Jan. 6 as announced by the league office. Cianfarano scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season against Rensselaer on Jan. 3, tying her for the most in the country with Minnesota's Dani Cameranesi. It was also her team-leading ninth goal of the season.
Most In Conference
With Cianfarano's ECAC Hockey Women's Rookie of the Week Award, it was the eighth weekly award the Bobcats have won this season, giving them the most in the ECAC. The next close team to the Bobcats is St. Lawrence, who checks in with five players winning ECAC weekly awards.
National Polls
Quinnipiac remains ranked in the Top Five of the USCHO.com Division I Women's Poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine for the ninth straight week after being ranked No. 5 in the first polls of 2015. It is the third straight week the Bobcats have been ranked No. 5 in each poll as well. The Bobcats are the highest ranked ECAC Women's Hockey team once again, with Harvard hot on their heels at No. 6, Clarkson at No. 8 and Cornell breaking back into the Top 10 at No. 10 in the USCHO poll while Harvard and Clarkson are the only other ECAC teams ranked in the USA Today poll, at No. 6 and No. 8 respectively.
Leading the Charge
Quinnipiac University is the only school in the country to have both of its ice hockey teams in first place in their conference standings, as both the men's and women's ice hockey teams are first in ECAC Hockey. The women's ice hockey team is currently in first place over Harvard, leading 20 points to 15 points with a 9-1-2 conference record. The men's ice hockey team leads Harvard in the men's standings as well, with a 16-14 points advantage due to an 8-2-0 conference record going into the weekend.
Heading Up North
Associate Head Coach Cassandra Turner is in Buffalo, New York for the week, serving as the Head Coach of the Canadian U-18 Team at the IIHF U-18 World Women's Championships. Turner is in her fifth season with Hockey Canada and first as a head coach. Heading into Thursday's games, the Canadians were in second place in Group A with a 1-1 record. Canada defeated Russia 3-2 after losing to the United States in a shootout, 2-1. Class of 2019 recruit Melissa Samoskevich scored for the United States against the Czech Republic on Tuesday for her first goal of the tournament as the United States is 2-0 in the preliminary round so far.
Balanced Attack
Quinnipiac's offensive output this season has been spread out amongst the top three lines, providing a balanced attack that teams have had trouble dealing with. The Darkangelo-Kosta-Uden Johansson line has scored 18 goals, racked up 26 assists for a total of 44 points. The second line of Connery-Cianfarano-Fritz-Ward has scored the most goals so far this season, with 19 goals and 25 assists for 44 total points. The third line for the Bobcats of Brown-Woods-Turner has kept the attack balanced, posting 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points. As a team, the Bobcats have scored 58 goals in 19 games.
We're Talkin' Bout Defense
The Bobcats are the No. 1 defense in the country and that proved true this weekend against Union and Rensselaer. Quinnipiac has given up just 16 goals in 20 games, good for a 0.80 goals per game average. Teams have managed just 288 shots in 20 games, an average of 14.4 per game. In the third period against Union, the Bobcats did not allow a single shot attempt and held the Dutchwomen to a season-low four shots, the fewest allowed in a game in program history. The previous low was six shots allowed against Southern Maine on Nov. 21, 2003.
The Iron Laden
It was a historic weekend for Chelsea Laden, as she tied and broke the Quinnipiac single-season record for shutouts. Laden needed just four saves in a 4-0 shutout of Union to tie the record of nine shutouts in a season, set by former goaltender Victoria Vigilanti in the 2010-11 season. The following night, Laden broke the record with an eight save shutout of Rensselaer, as she recorded her 10th shutout of the season. Laden's previous single-season high was eight shutouts, set in the 2013-14 season.
Double Trouble
Shiann Darkangelo recorded the ninth multi-goal game of her career against Union, when she scored two goals against the Dutchwomen in a 4-0 shutout. It was Darkangelo's first multi-goal game of the season and her second multi-point game. Darkangelo now sits just six points shy of 100 for her career, as she got her 94th point against Princeton on Tuesday, Darkangelo now has 53 goals to her name in her collegiate career.
TT For the Win
Taylar Cianfarano got back in the goal column Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer as she scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory over the Engineers. The goal was Cianfarano's team-leading ninth goal of the season, as she moved into a tie for the national lead among rookies for goals with Wisconsin's Annie Pankowski and St. Lawrence's Kennedy Marchment. It was also Cianfarano's fifth game-winning goal of the season, propelling her back into a tie for the national lead with Minnesota's Dani Cameranesi.
Top of the Blue Line
Cydney Roesler continues to be the most offensively productive defenseman this season as she tallied her second two-point game of the season. Roesler scored a goal and assisted Shiann Darkangelo's power play goal in the 4-0 victory over Union. Roesler now has five goals and four assists for nine points from the blue line. Roesler also leads the team in blocked shots with 32.
Born in the USA
Shiann Darkangelo and Chelsea Laden were both invited to the USA Women's Hockey Winter Training Camp from Dec. 27-31 in Blaine, Minnesota to train with the National Team. 14 members of the Olympic silver-medalist squad were also invited to the camp. For Darkangelo, it is just the latest chapter in a journey with the USA women's national team while Laden has been invited to her second training camp in the calendar year.
