SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Chelsea Laden (Lakeville, Minnesota) tied the single-season program record with her ninth shutout of the season Friday afternoon as the No. 5/5 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team blanked the Union Dutchwomen 4-0 at Messa Rink.
Laden tied the shutout record of nine set by former goaltender Victoria Vigilanti during the 2010-11 season. The shutout also broke Laden's personal record of eight shutouts in a season set in 2013-14. Laden recorded four saves for the Bobcats in the shutout of the Dutchwomen as she continues to lead the country in shutouts (9) and GAA (0.82).
Shiann Darkangelo (Brighton, Michigan) recorded the ninth multi-goal game of her career as she netted two goals in the victory. It was the first multi-goal game of the season for Darkangelo and her second multi-point game. Darkangelo now has 93 career points with the 51st and 52nd goals of her career.
Cydney Roesler (Stittsville, Ontario) netted her fifth goal of the season with a third-period goal and added an assist on Darkangelo's first period power play goal for her second multi-point game of the season.
Morgan Fritz-Ward (Mason City, Iowa) tallied her third goal of the season in the victory.
Quinnipiac outshot Union 39-4 in the dominating victory, including 14-0 in the third period. Union had just 10 total shot attempts in the game, with just four going on net to Laden.
Darkangelo gave the Bobcats a 1-0 lead with 12:22 remaining in the second period. Quinnipiac went on the power play after a Kathryn Davis penalty and cycled the puck around. Roesler fed the puck to Nicole Kosta (Mississauga, Ontario) from the point to the top of the left faceoff circle. Kosta then fired a shot where Darkangelo redirected it on the right side of the slot and past Union goaltender Shenae Lundberg for the goal.
Kosta finished the game with two assists to maintain her team lead with 12 assists. Kosta sits at 88 career points, good for second on the active roster behind Darkangelo.
The Bobcats went 1-3 on the power play against the Dutchwomen, scoring their first power play goal since Nov. 14, 2014 at home versus Rensselaer, breaking a drought of eight games. It was Darkangelo's second power play goal of the season.
Fritz-Ward doubled the Bobcats lead to 2-0 with 3:24 remaining in the second period. Taylar Cianfarano (Oswego, New York) skated behind the Union goal to collect the puck and drop it off for Nicole Connery (Newmarket, Ontario). Connery shipped a pass from just to the right side of the net to Fritz-Ward in the left faceoff circle where she buried the puck for the goal.
Just one minute later, Darkangelo scored her second goal of the game. Erica Uden Johansson (Sundsvall, Sweden) gathered the puck and skated into the neutral zone where she passed the puck to Kosta in the middle of the neutral zone. Kosta fed the puck to Darkangelo on the left wing where she skated to the top of the left faceoff circle and wristed the puck high past Lundberg's gloveside to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
Midway through the third period Roesler extended Quinnipiac's lead to 4-0 as she skated into the offensive zone and stole the puck off Caitlyn McLaren's stick. From there Roesler skated with the puck through the left faceoff circle and into the slot where she scored for the Bobcats.
Lundberg finished the game with 35 saves on 39 shots between the pipes for the Dutchwomen.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Troy, New York to face the Rensselaer Engineers at Houston Field House with puck drop scheduled for 3 P.M.
