Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac men's soccer team suffered a tough lost at the hands of ACC power Boston College, 2-0. The game marked the 2014 home opener for the Bobcats at the QU Soccer Field. After dropping their first two games of the season at the Lakeside Classic in Evanston, Indiana, Quinnipiac wanted to use their home field crowd to bounce back and record their first victory.
Both teams started the game strong defensively with few scoring chances coming from either team. The Bobcats (0-3-0) recorded two shots on goal in the first period, the best opportunity coming of a corner kick. Junior Eric Panzer, volleyed a header off the set piece, but was saved by the Eagles goalkeeper, Alex Kapp.
Late in the first have Boston College junior, Derrick Boateng scored his first goal of the season and sixth of his career. The midfielder fired a strike from the top of the box which caught the side netting after a two-handed attempt at the save by Bobcat, Borja Angoitia. The goal was the Eagles only shot on goal in the frame. Quinnipiac outshot the opposition 5-2 in the first half.
The second half started off much like the first with strong physical play coming from both schools. Quinnipiac's defense remained solid, stopping four shots in the first three minutes. Borja saved two shot attempts by the Eagles and the back line blocked the other two.
In the 57th minute, the Bobcats saw their best chance at a goal with an indirect kick. Freshman midfielder Shaquille Huggins, recorded his first shot with a rip from just outside the box that bent wide of the far post. Quinnipiac continued to attack, but could not find openings to put a ball on net.
Late in the game, Boston College defender, Issac Normesinu found space and chipped Angoitia for his second goal of the season. Boateng was credited with the assist and his 3rd point of the match.
The Bobcats return to action on Sunday, Sept. 7 with their second home game of the 2014 season. Quinnipiac welcomes Providence College to Hamden for a 2:30 p.m. start at the QU Soccer Field.
