Hamden, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men's soccer team captured their first victory of the season with a 3-1 win over Providence College. The Bobcats also secured their first all-time win against a BIG EAST opponent at the QU Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
Looking for their first score of 2014, junior James Greco (Long Valley, N.J.) sent a great ball into the box off a free kick that found the head of freshman Shaquille Huggins (Trinidad and Tobago) for the game's first goal. Huggins controlled a high ball and was able to redirect it into the side netting to put Quinnipiac up 1-0 in the fourth minute. Greco, a transfer from Rider, recorded his first career point at Quinnipiac.
Providence was able to even the score at one apiece with their first and only goal of the game coming in the 18th minute. Forward Markus Naglestad took a touch and struck the ball off the far post as senior Dominik Machado was able to gather the rebound and get a foot on the ball to send it by Bobcat goalkeeper Borja Angoitia (Bilbao, Spain). Machado recorded his first goal of the season and fourth of his career as a Friar.
Quinnipiac quickly responded with their second goal on the afternoon in the 22nd minute. Freshman Max Rothenbuecher (Munich, Germany) deked a couple defenders inside the box and played a beautiful ball to setup Machel Baker (Spanish Town, Jamaica) for the score. Baker recorded his seventh career goal and 20th point as a Bobcat. With the lead, Quinnipiac was able to hold back and contain the Friar attack for the rest of the half.
The second half began with limited action until a James-to-James connection found the third Quinnipiac goal. In the 57th minute, Greco found sophomore James Doig (Liverpool, England) in open space who rocketed his first career goal off the outstretched hands of the Friar goalkeeper. Greco tallied his second assist of the day with his play to setup Doig.
With the win, the Bobcats (1-3-0) were able to taste a bit of revenge after falling last year to Providence (3-1-0) in a tight thriller, 3-2. Up next, Quinnipiac will hit the road to visit the Army Black Knights in West Point, N.Y on Saturday, Sept. 13th. In 2013, the Bobcats hosted the Black Knights and finished in a 0-0 tie after two overtimes.
