STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac men's cross country team kicked off their 2014 campaign with a 3rd place finish at the Stony Brook Invitational. The Bobcats (68 points) were paced by five runners who placed in the Top 22 finishers overall, including a career-best finish for junior Matt Mensher (Tolland, Conn.). The host Seawolves claimed first place with 19 points while Quinnipiac's MAAC rival Fairfield barley outkicked the Bobcats with 66 points.
Mensher was certainly the star for the Bobcats on Saturday as he posted the best finish of his career, crossing the line in 7th place overall. Coming into the Stony Brook Invitational with a previous career-high of 9th place, Mensher busted through with his second career Top 10 and also placed as the fastest Bobcat in an event for the first time in his career. The fleet-footed junior earned the result with a time of 19:21.42 in the 6k event.
Following up Mensher's career day in 11th place overall was freshman Drew Reda (Holmdel, N.J.). Racing amongst a crowded field of 56 competitors, Reda successfully navigated his way through traffic to land a spot away from a Top 10 result with a time of 19:41.61.
Two more freshmen followed Reda's lead, both of which finished among the Top 20 runners in Saturday's meet. The run continued with Connor McAlary (Shoreham, N.Y.) who earned a 17th place result with a time of 19:54.48. Fellow classmate Sal Siciliano (Avon, Conn.) finished strong to finish the event in 20th place, crossing the line in 20:01.95.
Rounding out the top five for the Bobcats on Saturday was sophomore Kyle Liang (Norwich, Conn.). One of the Bobcats' most-durable runners in the 2013 campaign finished just one spot short of matching his career high as Liang placed 22nd in his 2014 debut. Liang's time of 20:08.03 was nearly 20 seconds fastest than his time at the 2013 Stony Brook Invitational (20:25.40).
Quinnipiac will look to continue their strong start to the 2014 season next weekend as they'll take part in the Bryant Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6 with the meet slated to begin at 11:00 am.
