
Softball Sweeps Monmouth In NEC Twinbill

HAMDEN,
Conn. - The Quinnipiac University softball team swept Northeast
Conference opponent Monmouth in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 3
at the Quinnipiac Softball Field. Quinnipiac shut out the Hawks,
2-0, in the first outing and won, 4-1, in game two. With the wins,
the Bobcats improve to 19-14 overall and at 3-1 in the NEC, while
Monmouth drops to 12-13 on the year and at 3-3 in conference
play.
Quinnipiac pitcher Heather
Schwartzburg (Mission Viejo, Calif.) improved to 12-6 on the
year after picking up two victories against Monmouth. The
right-handed junior pitched a complete game in the 2-0 shutout,
while striking out seven batters. In the second contest,
Schwartzburg struck out 12 batters across four innings. She only
allowed one hit in each game against the Hawks.
In game one,
the Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Junior
shortstop Christy
Cabrera (Reno, Nev.) led off with a walk and advanced to third
as Jacqueline
Ristow (Seal Beach, Calif.) and Alex
Alba (Sylmar, Calif.) each grounded out. Cabrera went on to
score Quinnipiac's first run of the game on a wild pitch.
Quinnipiac added a run in the sixth when senior Joelle
Jacobsen (Flemington, N.J.) singled to right field, driving in
Ashley
Heiberger (Sioux Falls, S.D.), who reached base on a walk.
The Bobcats outhit the Hawks, 6-2, in game one as six different
players each contributed a hit against Monmouth. The Bobcats were
led by Cabrera, who went 1-for-2 with a run scored. In addition,
Heiberger had one hit on her only at bat, while Jacobsen went
1-for-2 with a RBI.
In the second outing, Monmouth went ahead 1-0 in the first, as
Shannon Fitzgerald hit a single off Quinnipiac's Mina
Duffy (Piedmont, Calif.), to drive in Christine Scherr.
The Bobcats' tied the game at one run apiece in the bottom of the
third when freshman Jordan
Paolucci (Lake Mary, Fla.) nailed her sixth-career home run to
right center. In the fourth inning, Quinnipiac earned two runs on
four hits to hold a 3-1 advantage. After Cabrera reached base on a
single up the middle, Ristow hit her first homer of the year, to
drive in two Quinnipiac runs.
In the bottom of the fifth, Duffy led off with a single to center
field. Kortney
Kesses (Woodbridge, Conn.) entered the game as the pinch runner
for Duffy and went on to score an insurance run for Quinnipiac on a
Cabrera single up the middle.
Paolucci went 3-for-3 in game two, while Cabrera went 3-for-4. Both
Paolucci and Cabrera each added a run and a RBI. In addition,
Quinnipiac third baseman Bridget
Figmic (Stratford, Conn.) went 2-for-3, while Ristow drove in a
team-high two runs, while scoring a run and contributing one hit.
Duffy pitched three innings for the Bobcats, striking out three
batters and only allowing one hit.
Quinnipiac returns to action when it travels to play Fairfield on
Thursday, April 7 at the Alumni Softball Field in Fairfield, Conn.
at 3:30 p.m.
