Junior
goalie Bud Fisher (Peterborough, Ont.) stopped 25 shots in goal for
his third shutout of the season and ninth of his career as #16
Quinnipiac defeated Brown, 3-0, in an ECAC Hockey game played at
the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The win pushes
Quinnipiac to 17-7-4 overall and 9-3-4 in ECAC Hockey. The loss
drops Brown to 3-16-4 overall and 3-10-3 in ECAC Hockey action.
Mike Atkinson's (Sparta, N.J.) fourth goal of the season beat Brown
goalie Dan Rosen to the five-hole with just over a minute in the
first period remaining. Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) took a pass
from Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) on the left side of the Brown goal
and fed Atkinson in the left face-off circle. The assist was
Lampe's fifth of the season while Holt picks up his fourth helper
of the year.
"I didn't think we played well in the first period," head coach
Rand Pecknold said. "It was a Sunday afternoon game and we had a
little bit of a hangover from the big win Friday night. We talked
about it and addressed it in a couple of different ways. I tried to
switch the lines up to give us a little bit of life and I thought
we were real fortunate to get out of the first with a 1-0
lead."
Fisher stopped 14 shots in the first period as the Bears outshot
Quinnipiac, 14-11. The Bobcats' defense clamped down on the Brown
attack after the first frame, holding the Bears to just 11 shots
over the final two periods.
"The guys did a great job in front of the net," Fisher said. "I
gave up some rebounds but the guys cleared them and made it easy
for me and helped eliminate their scoring chances. We knew this
game was huge in the standings and we knew they were going to come
out flying."
Dan
Travis (Wilton, N.H.) scored at the 16:18 mark of the third period
to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead. Chris Myers (Wallaceburg,
Ont.)handled the puck to the left of the goal and passed to Isak
Tranvik (Robbinsdale, Minn.) in front of the Brown goal. Myers then
skated behind Tranvik as he dropped the puck back to Travis.
Travis' shot from the left side of the goal found the lower right
corner of the goal to beat Rosen in net. The goal was Travis' 10th
of the season while Myers picks up his first helper of the year.
The assist was Tranvik's third of the year.
Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) scored the Bobcats third goal of the
game, late in the third period. Trailing 2-0, Brown pulled their
goalie. Tranvik was able to handle the puck and get it to Wong on
the wing. Wong made a nice move and flipped a shot from just over
the blue line for this ninth goal of the season. Tranvik's assist
was his second of the game and third of the season.
"Bud
played well and we did a good job in front of him. We gave up a lot
of perimeter shots and quality chances weren't quite there,"
Pecknold explained. "He did what he needed to do to keep us in it
and made saves in the first when he needed to. Anytime you get a
shutout in this league is great."
The Bobcats return to play on Friday, Feb. 15 when theytake on
Dartmouth College in an ECAC Hockey showdown set for 7 p.m. in
Hanover, N.H. Quinnipiac then travels to Cambridge, Mass. on
Saturday, Feb. 16 to face Harvard at 7 p.m.
