Justin Eddy
- Title:
- Men’s Ice Hockey Goalie Coach
Justin Eddy ’04 enters his eighth season as the Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey goaltending coach, and tenth overall, when the 2025-26 season begins in October.
This 2024-25 campaign saw Eddy guiding two young netminders to anchor yet another great Bobcat defense. Sophomore goalie Matej Marinov finished second in the country in goalie win percentage (.800), third in goals-against average (1.75) and seventh in save percentage (.928), all under Eddy's guidance.
Under his guidance, Vinny Duplessis was another Bobcat to be named as a Mike Richter Award semifinalist, an award given to the nation's top goaltender. He was also a finalist for the 2024 ECAC Hockey Ken Dryden Goaltender of the Year award and was named the Most Outstanding Player at CT Ice.
Just the latest in standout netminders under Eddy’s guidance, sophomore netminder Yaniv Perets rewrote the Quinnipiac record books and made national headlines as one of the nation’s top goaltenders.
For the second season in a row, he was a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, as well as a Hobey Baker Top 10 honoree during the 2022-23 campaign, all under Eddy’s tutelage. Before signing with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes, Perets led the country in winning percentage, goals-against average and shutouts, and was third in save percentage on the NCAA leaderboards.
During the 2021-22 campaign, Eddy guided not only one, but two nationally recognized netminders in Perets and Dylan St. Cyr. The former posted a 1.17 goals-against average in starting 31 games for the Bobcats, while the latter finished with a 1.16 goals-against average in 14 games between the posts. Those two are both first and second on the NCAA leaderboard for lowest goals-against average by a netminder in NCAA history.
Eddy played a key role in the development of Keith Petruzzelli over the last two seasons. In 2020-21, Petruzzelli was named the ECAC Hockey Goaltender of the Year and was a finalist for the league's player of the year. He was also a First Team All-ECAC Hockey Selection, Top 10 Finalist for the Hobey Baker Award and Finalist for the Mike Richter Award.
Petruzzelli had career-bests in 2020-21 as he led the nation in minutes played with 1715:45 and 29 starts, and had career-highs with four shutouts, a 1.89 GAA and a .926 save percentage. He went 17-8-4 and guided Quinnipiac to its second Cleary Cup in the last three seasons and a second NCAA Tournament trip in that span.
In the first season back of his second stint with the program, Quinnipiac went 21-11-2. Eddy's work was highlighted by the breakout season from Keith Petruzzelli, who posted a 2.01 GAA and .920 save percentage and three shutouts. Petruzzelli ranked third in ECAC Hockey in GAA and wins (21), fourth in saves (761) and shutouts, and fifth in save percentage.
He previously held the position for two seasons during the 2009-10 season and in 2010-11. In his first two seasons with the Bobcats, Quinnipiac went 36-33-10 and reached the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals in each of the two seasons.
Eddy became the Quinnipiac player to sign a professional contract with an NHL team, signing with the Washington Capitals before playing parts of two seasons in the AHL with the Portland Pirates and the ECHL with the South Carolina Stingrays and Utah Grizzlies.
In his Quinnipiac career, Eddy posted a 2.81 GAA and .910 save percentage in 75 games to go with a 32-26-8 record and three shutouts. In his professional career, Eddy posted a record of 30-31-7.
As a senior, Eddy was the recipient of the Coaches’ Award and as a freshman he received the team’s Rookie of the Year Award.
The Bobcats reached the NCAA Tournament during Eddy’s sophomore season where he made 28 saves against Cornell in the program’s first-ever NCAA Tournament game. The Bobcats also won the 2002 MAAC Championship and were MAAC Finalists two other times in 2001 and 2003.
One of Eddy’s best games of his career came on Nov. 30, 2000, when he tallied 58 saves against St. Lawrence in a 1-1 tie, at the time a record for most saves in a game in program history.
A native of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Eddy graduated from Quinnipiac in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations.
