As a Senior in 2017-18:
- MAAC All-Academic Team
- Earned an eighth place finish at the MAAC Championships in the shot put (2/18) with a 12.01
- Set a personal best in the shot put at the New England Championships (2/2) with a 12.71, finishing in 11th place
- Set a personal best in the weight throw at the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University with an 11.57.
- Started the year with three straight top-10 finishes in the shot put, coming in ninth at the Yale Season Opener (12/9) with an 11.00, tenth at the Great Dane Classic (1/13) with a 12.19, and ninth at the Gotham Cup (1/19)0 with an 11.58.
As a Junior in 2016-17:
- 2016-17 MAAC All-Academic Team
- Established new personal-bests in the shot put and weight throw in 2016-17
- Opened the season with a sixth place finish at the Yale Season Opener (12/10) in the shot put with a toss of 11.11m
- Placed seventh in the shot put at the URI Sorlien Invitational (1/21) with a throw of 11.01m
- Took seventh place in the shot put at the Giegengack Invitational (2/3) with a toss of 11.55m
- Scored a 21st place finish out of 40 competitors in the shot put at the Valentine Invitational (2/10) as she threw 12.14m
- Placed ninth in the shot put (personal-best 12.16m) and 15th in the weight throw (8.86m) at the MAAC Championships (2/18)
As a Sophomore in 2015-16:
- 2015-16 MAAC All-Academic Team
- Took second place in the shot put in her first appearance of the season at the Yale Season Opener (12/5) with a throw of 11.75m
- Posted another second place finish in the shot put the following week at the Wagner Seahawk Shootout (12/11) as she threw 12.03m
- Came through with another runner-up finish in the shot put with a throw of 11.97m at the Giegengack Invitational (2/5)
- Earned a ninth place finish in the shot put at the MAAC Championships (2/21) with a throw of 11.32m
- Placed 13th overall with a personal-best 12.09m in the shot put at the New England Championships (2/26)
As a Freshman in 2014-15:
- Became the first Bobcat to compete in a shot put event in program history
- Achieved a season-best throw of 10.16m at the Gotham Cup (1/16)
- Also threw another 10+m throw at the Metro Team Challenge (1/23) where she achieved a throw of 10.01m
- Placed 10th overall at the MAAC Championships (2/21) with a throw of 9.90m
Prior to Quinnipiac:
- Lettered in track, basketball and volleyball in her four years at the Academy of the Holy Angels
- Was named First Team All-League in 2014 after growing into her signature shot-put event
- Also picked up First Team All-Division honors in the shot-put in 2014
- Before breaking out in her senior year, Merkel was also named Second Team All-League in the shot-put, Second Team All-Division and honorable mention All-Bergen for girls track & field
- Led her team to the 2012 County Relay Championship
Personal:
- Born in Englewood, N.J. and raised in Hillsdale, N.J.
- Daughter of Ronald and Colleen Merkel
- Has one younger brother Aidan
- Mackenzie’s younger brother has influenced her life in many ways as Aidan is autistic and did suffer from prader-willi syndrome as well as hypotonia
- After watching many of his physical therapy session, she found the passion and motivation to pursue the career of a physical therapist
- Always keen to the struggle of her younger brother, Merkel’s internal drive and competition comes directly from the inner strength shown every day from Aidan
- Majoring in Physical Therapy/Athletic Training at Quinnipiac
