
Baseball Falls in Series Finale to Morehead State

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bobcats started the scoring early in this one as they opened the first inning by scoring two runs. Sebastian Mueller got the Bobcats on the board with an RBI single to center field as Kyle Garbowski came home with the run. Later in the inning, Johnny Knox dropped down a beautiful bunt to score Mueller to make it 2-0 Bobcats.
Quinnipiac added to their lead in the second inning as Kyle Garbowski singled home Cole Constable to give the Bobcats a 3-0 lead. Morehead State put up a five-spot in the bottom of the second inning to take the lead.
The Bobcats retook the lead in the top of the third inning as they brought in three runs. Cole Constable brought home two runs as he reached on a fielder's choice and Sean McCulloch followed up with a single back to the pitcher to score Constable. Quinnipiac's lead did not last long as Morehead State put up four runs in the bottom half of the inning to take the lead right back.
Morehead State made it a 10-6 lead in the fifth inning as a run came home on a fielder's choice. Quinnipiac cut into Morehead State's lead as they brought home three runs in the sixth inning. Christian Smith brought home the first run of the inning on a single and two bases-loaded walks brought home two more runs. The Eagles put up a four spot in the bottom half of the inning to take a 14-9 lead into the final three innings.
Quinnipiac got one run back in the seventh inning as Christian Smith drove in his second RBI of the game. The Bobcats made it a three-run game in the eighth inning thanks to Constable scoring on a groundout.
In the top of the ninth, Christian Smith hit a two-run home run to make it a one-run game. However, Morehead State would get the three outs they needed to close out the win to take the series.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Eight of the nine starters recorded at least one hit in the series finale and six recorded multiple hits.
- Christian Smith drove in four RBIs to push his season total to 16.
- Sebastian Mueller continues his hot start to the season as he picked up three more hits to push his batting average to .447.
- Alex Irizarry had a good day at the plate, picking up four hits in six at-bats, including two doubles.
- The Bobcats were 5-for-6 on stolen base attempts in the final game at Morehead State.
- The Bobcats will open MAAC play on Friday, March 7th, when they welcome the Iona Gaels to Hamden for game one of the three-game series.
