Bobcats Bounce Back After Game One Loss to Georgia

WILMINGTON, N.C. – After the Bobcats fell to the Georgia Bulldogs in Game One, Quinnipiac battled back to defeat the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in ten innings, 10-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
Georgia got the game started with a two-run top of the first inning on a bases-loaded walk and a sac fly.

The Bobcats were held hitless through three innings but came out swinging in the fourth inning. Sebastian Mueller got the inning started with a double to right field and crossed home on a Christian Smith single. Cole Constable would put the ball in play, reaching on an error as CJ Willis came home with Quinnipiac's second run of the inning. Quinnipiac wasn't done as Sean McCulloch reached on an infield single to bring home Smith and give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead.

The Bulldogs would even the game in the sixth inning on an RBI triple. Just an inning later, Georgia would take the lead with an RBI single. Quinnipiac would knot the game up at four runs apiece on a Kyle Garbowski RBI groundout, bringing Gabe Wright home.

With the game knotted at four heading into the eighth inning, the Bulldogs brought home three runs to give themselves a 7-4 lead.

Georgia would hold the Bobcats right there as they sealed the 7-4 victory to move to 2-0.

GAME TWO
UNC Wilmington struck for two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead. The Seahawks added another run in the fourth inning to make it a 3-0 game.

The Bobcats came out swinging in the sixth inning as they struck for three runs to knot the game up. Sebastian Mueller brought home Gabe Wright to get the Bobcats on their board. CJ Willis stepped in as the next batter and scored Kyle Garbowski to make it a 3-2 game. With one out in the inning, Alex Irizarry reached on a fielder's choice as CJ Willis scored to even the game at three.

With the score tied at three in the ninth inning, James Marino stepped up to the dish with Alex Irizarry on second and doubled down the left-field line to bring him home. Gabe Wright followed up with an RBI single to center to give Quinnipiac the 5-3 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, the Seahawks were able to load the bases and score two to send the game to extra innings.

The Bobcats loaded the bases in the top of the tenth inning, and Gabe Wright brought home Christian Smith with a sacrifice fly to regain the lead, 6-5. Four straight walks with the bases loaded made it a 10-5 lead for Quinnipiac. In the bottom half of the inning, the Seahawks scored one run before Johnny Knox came in to close out the win.

NEWS AND NOTES
Game One

Four different Bobcats recorded hits in game one against Georgia.
Sebastian Mueller picked up two hits in four at-bats and scored a run in game one.
Sean McCulloch had a good day at the plate in game one, going 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks against Georgia.
Christian Smith and Gabe Wright each picked up one hit in the loss to the Bulldogs.
Mike Poncini got the start for QU and went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts while allowing just two runs.

Game Two

Eight Bobcats recorded at least one hit in the win over UNC Wilmington.
Sebastian Mueller, CJ Willis, and Gabe Wright each drove in two RBIs.
Christian Smith and James Marino each picked up two hits in the win.
The Bobcats drew nine walks in the extra-inning win.
Matt Alduino got the ball in game two and went 4.0 innings, allowing three runs and striking out one.
Samuel Wright came in relief and tossed 4.2 innings of two-run ball while striking out four.
Johnny Knox came in to get the final two outs as he earned the save.

The Bobcats will be back next weekend (Feb. 21-23) as they travel to Virginia to take on Radford. The three-game series will kick off on Friday, Feb 21^st, with the first pitch scheduled for 3 PM.
