Bobcats Secure First MAAC Series Win With Victory Over Iona

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac baseball team captured their first MAAC series win with their 9-5 victory over Iona in the middle game of the series on Saturday afternoon in Hamden.

The Bobcats will improve to 8-18 and 2-6 in the MAAC to start the 2024 season, while Iona will go to 0-8 in conference play and 4-23 overall.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bobcats kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first as Christian Smith singled with the bases loaded to score Jared Zimbardo.

Matt DeRosa grounded out with the bases still loaded and brought home O'Connor for the second run of the inning. After Garbowski got hit by a pitch to reload the bases, Dominick Proctor stepped in as the next batter and got hit to bring home the third run of the inning.

After Iona hit a two-run home run to make it a 3-2 game, Sebastian Mueller stepped up to the dish in the second inning and singled to score Zimbardo and make it a two-run lead.

Another two-run home run from Iona in the top of the third evened the game at four a piece. To kick off the bottom of the third, Matt DeRosa launched a home run to left field and take back the lead.

Iona tied the game at five in the top of the fourth inning from an RBI single through the left side of the infield. DeRosa took the lead right back singling home Smith and making it a 6-5 game.

Quinnipiac doubled their lead in the fifth inning as Sebastian Mueller singled to left field and allowed Zimbardo to come home. In the bottom of the sixth, Gabe Wright put the ball in play and an error by the third baseman allowed him to reach safely and Smith crossed home plate.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, CJ Willis stepped up and left the building as he made it a 9-5 game.

NEWS AND NOTES

Seven different Bobcats recorded hits in the win over Iona.
Matt DeRosa led the team with 3 RBIs and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, his first of the year.
Sebastian Mueller drove in two runs and went 2-for-4 at the dish.
Christian Smith went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
CJ Willis launched his first fifth homer of the year with his seventh inning blast.
Dominick Proctor (2-for-4) and Gabe Wright (0-for-5) each drove home a run.
Skyler Manelski got the three-inning save and struck out six batters, including the final out if the ballgame.
Zimbardo's hit streak reached eight games after his 2-for-4 day at the plate.
O'Connor has gotten a hit in all but two games this season and nine straight games.
