Bobcats Pick Up First Win of 2023 in Sweep Over Morgan State

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Head Coach Kyle Robinson and the Quinnipiac women's volleyball team earned their first win of the 2023 campaign, sweeping Morgan State in straight sets to close play at the Hokie Invitational held inside of Cassell Coliseum.
Damla Gunes tallied 26 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season, while Ginevra Giovagnoni added 11 kills and 12 digs of her own for her second double-double of the season.
With the victory, Quinnipiac improves to 1-2 on the early campaign, while Morgan State fell to 0-3 to begin its season.

SET ONE (25-23, Quinnipiac)
The two sides traded points to a 10-10 tie before the Bobcats went on a 3-0 run to take a 13-10 lead, forcing a timeout from the Bears. Out of the timeout, Morgan State battled back to knot the set at 16-16 before back-to-back kills from Yagmur Gunes and Aryanah Diaz extended the lead to 18-16. Quinnipiac worked the lead to 19-17 before Morgan State burned its final timeout of the set.
Out of the timeout, Morgan State took two of the next three points to trim the QU lead to 20-19, forcing a timeout from the Bobcats. Unwavered, the Bobcats held on to secure the set out of the timeout, 25-23
SET TWO (25-20)
After falling behind 4-2 in the set, the Bobcats responded with a swift 6-0 run to force Morgan State to call a timeout trailing 8-4. The Bobcats kept the pressure on the Bears, extending the lead to as much as six points before Morgan State fought back to trim its deficit to 14-11.
However, the Bobcats maintained their distance, going on a 5-1 run to extend their lead to 19-12 before hanging on for the 25-20 set victory.
SET THREE (25-18)
The Bears got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 6-1 start before the Bobcats clawed their way back to a 7-1 run to take an 8-7 lead, forcing a Morgan State timeout. The Bobcats stayed hot out of the break, going on a 12-4 run to extend the lead to 20-11.
The Bears would never recover, as QU secured the 25-18 set win and match sweep.
NOTES:
The Bobcats will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 1, when they open play at the Columbia Invitational with a match against Virginia at 4:00 p.m.
