HAMDEN, Conn. - Three Quinnipiac student-athletes recently participated in the 2021 NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Training (SALT). Juniors Kayla Mingachos (women's soccer), Olivia Scott (women's soccer) and Kate Reilly (women's ice hockey) were selected to represent Quinnipiac at the summer session.
The 2021 training sessions helped student-athletes learn about personal development skills that will be beneficial to them on and off the field of competition. Mingachos, Scott and Reilly took part in the two-day virtual event from June 17-18. They heard from keynote speakers and engaged in virtual community service while interacting with student-athletes from around the country and Divisions I, II and III. The three Quinnipiac student-athletes learned about their own leadership DNA, which aids student-athletes in understanding the aspects of leading yourself before leading others.
"It was an awesome opportunity to be able to take part in the training with other athletes across the NCAA," Scott said. "Something that really stuck out to me was 'Captain is a title, leader is an attitude.' It was great to meet other athletes from various schools across the country, hear their experiences and take away things to bring back to Quinnipiac. Being able to be selected as a representative was an honor, and I hope to bring back what I learned during this experience to my team in August."
After the completion SALT, student-athletes will be able to recognize not only their own individual emotions, but also understand their teammates' emotions. This, in turn, helps student-athletes redefine their own leadership and communication skills.
"The NCAA Student Athlete Leadership Training was an eye-opening experience for me," Mingachos said. "It was such an honor to be one of student-athletes chosen to participate in this training and to be able to represent Quinnipiac on a national level. I met so many other student athletes from across the country, who I was able to connect with, and we were able to share our experiences and learn from one another. One of the main points I took out of this experience was the fact that to lead others, I need to be able to lead myself. This training allowed me to gain a deeper knowledge on what it means to be a leader and helped me find my leadership DNA."
The 2021 summer session of SALT provided Mingachos, Scott and Reilly the opportunity to also understand how their leadership DNA can help them after their competitive athletic days are over. The NCAA SALT program is designed to impact tomorrow's leaders by building a foundation of skills that help individuals lead themselves and the others around them.
"I am so grateful to have attended SALT21," Reilly said. "I loved learning new strategies to better understand myself as a leader and to connect with my teammates. It was great to learn alongside so many athletes from different sports and institutions."
