Bobcats Tie for League-Lead with Three Preseason All-MAAC Selections

EDISON, N.J. – The Quinnipiac baseball team has been picked to win a second straight MAAC Championship as they were selected first in the MAAC Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced on Tuesday, February 11.
2020 marks the first time in program history that the Bobcats were selected as the preseason favorite in the MAAC Coaches' Poll as they received four of the 11 first-place votes and 105 points in the poll. Fairfield was picked second with three first-place votes and 101 points and Manhattan third with three first-place votes and 99 points.
In addition to being selected first in the preseason poll, the Bobcats had three players named to the Preseason All-MAAC Team with Colton Bender (Lebanon, Connecticut) at catcher, Andre Marrero (West Springfield, Massachusetts) in the outfield and Ian Ostberg (Northampton, Massachusetts) at utility.
Bender's selection at catcher to the preseason All-MAAC Team is his second after garnering the honor last season.
Quinnipiac had a record-breaking 2019 season as the Bobcats won a program-record 30 games, clinched the program's first MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championships as well as winning its first-ever NCAA Tournament game with a 5-4 win over #10 ECU in the Greenville Regional.
Bender, Marrero and Ostberg were all named to All-MAAC Teams in 2019 with Marrero and Ostberg on the first team at outfield and utility, respectively, while Bender received second team honors at designated hitter.
Bender led the Bobcats with a .322 batting average last season and was third on the team with 66 hits. He closed out the season with a 10-game hitting streak, including six hits in the NCAA Tournament where hew as 6 for 13. He set career-highs across the board in every offensive and defensive category.
Marrero also had a career-year for the Bobcats as he batted .316 with career-highs of 74 hits, 10 home runs, 51 runs scored, 48 RBIs, a .383 on base percentage and a .538 slugging percentage. Marrero's 24 extra-base hits were the most he's hit in a career while his 74 total his were tied for the third-most in Division I program history, 51 runs scored were the most scored and his 48 RBIs were the fifth-most.
Ostberg also had an impressive 2019 campaign as he recorded career-highs in every offensive category as he was second on the team with a .321 batting average and also had a .383 on base percentage to go with 72 hits, 37 runs, 35 RBIs and 11 doubles. His 72 hits were tied for sixth in a single-season in Division I program history.
Quinnipiac kicks off the 2020 campaign on Friday as they travel to San Antonio, Texas, to take on the UTSA Roadrunners in a three-game series. First pitch on Friday is set for 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT.
