
Rich Marcello Named Head Men's Cross Country Coach

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac Athletic Director Greg Amodio has announced the addition of Rich Marcello as the head men's cross country coach.
Marcello comes to Quinnipiac after serving as the associate head coach for men's and women's cross country and associate track & field coach at SUNY Oneonta in Oneonta, N.Y.
"I'm really looking forward to this next challenge, and I am excited to be working with such a great group of young men and an amazing staff here at Quinnipiac," Marcello said. "I'm also so happy to be back in Connecticut where I first started my coaching career."
Marcello led the men's cross country team at SUNY Oneonta to the 2018 and 2019 Division III NCAA Championships. He guided the men's cross country team to the team's highest Atlantic Region team ranking in program history (third) and highest consecutive Atlantic Region Championship finishes in program history (fourth and fifth). His team also placed second at the 2018 and 2019 SUNYAC Cross Country Championships, which was the lowest point total in team history in consecutive years.

Marcello also has experience coaching at the high school level. He coached at Weston and Newtown High School in Connecticut from 2013-2018. He saw 13 Southwest Conference Team Championships, four All-time Southwest Conference records broken, 25 All-State members, 8 All-New England athletes and four All-Americans.
While at SUNY Oneonta, Marcello was also an adjunct professor in the Department of Health and Fitness. He taught courses like Intro to Sports Management, Theories and Principles of Strength and Conditioning and Biomechanics. In addition, Marcello was an instructor in the Department of Physical Therapy and Human Movement at Sacred Heart from 2014-2018. In addition to an extensive coaching and teaching career, Marcello was also involved as a Clinical Exercise Scientist at Sacred Heart's Pioneer Performance Center from 2014-2018. He co-directed RUNscience, a yearly clinic for high school cross country and track coaches and athletes, and oversaw all physiological testing including VO2 max, lactate threshold and body composition at the clinic.
As a collegiate runner, Marcello was a two-year captain at Sacred Heart on the cross country and track & field teams. He is a three-time Sacred Heart record holder in the 5000m (indoor and outdoor) and 10K and a five-time NEC Championship point scorer . Marcello was an eight-time NEC Academic Honor Roll member and two-time NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll member.
Marcello graduated from Sacred Heart with a Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science in 2012 and a Master's degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition in 2014.
