GAME NOTES:
Four, three, two, ONE:
Quinnipiac is set to host URI for a home game on Wednesday, Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. The Bobcats are coming off an overtime victory over Bryant in the season opener. Kelsey Goldring scored the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute of extra time, giving Quinnipiac the 1-0 win.
Scouting the Rams:
URI played its season-opening game at the University of New Hampshire on Thursday, Aug. 22. The Rams defeated UNH, 1-0, in overtime with a late goal by freshman Natalia O'Leary. URI's opening victory of the 2019 sesason was the first regular-season win for the program since 2017.
All-Time Results vs URI:
Wednesday's game will be the first time the Bobcats and Rams have played since 2010. On Sept. 19, 2010, Quinnipiac won 1-0, and in 2000 URI won 5-4.
New Season, New Team:
Quinnipiac welcomes 11 newcomers to the squad, with five players coming from Ontario, four coming from New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois, one from England and one from the Netherlands. Seventeen players will return from the 2018 roster, including Selena Salas, who received All-MAAC honors at the end of the season.
Freshmen Impact:
The freshmen made an immediate impact on the team in the season opener. Freshman Markela Bejleri tallied the assist on Goldring's game-winning goal. Freshmen Dani Zerbo and Kayla Mingachos recorded important minutes in the back line, along with Olivia Scott who started and played the entire game in the midfield.
2019 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll:
The Monmouth Hawks were selected to finish first in the MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll, followed by Quinnipiac in second. Siena, Marist, Rider, Niagara, Fairfield, Manhattan, Canisius, Iona and Saint Peter's completed the preseason poll.Quinnipiac's Selena Salas was voted to the Preseason All-MAAC team. Monmouth's Madie Gibson was named the Preseason Player of the Year.
