HAMDEN, Conn. – After picking up the first win of the 2018 season, the Quinnipiac field hockey team returns to action this weekend with a pair of weekend games at Columbia and against Michigan State in another slate of non-conference games.
Last Time Out
The Bobcats battled back after a 7-0 loss to No. 13 Boston College to earn a 2-1 victory at Vermont on Sunday. Valerie Perkins scored the game-winning goal early in the second half before the Bobcats turned away seven penalty corners to hang on to the victory.
Scouting Columbia
The Lions come into the 2018 season after finishing 2017 with a 9-8 record and 4-3 mark in Ivy League. Columbia finished tied for third in the Ivy League with Penn. Columbia returns its leading scorer from the 2017 season in Maeve Doherty who had 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points. Goalkeeper Katie Dempsey also returns for her junior season after tallying 100 saves to go with a 2.70 GAA and .690 save percentage.
Scouting Michigan State
The Spartans come out east for a trio of games against top competition, taking on the Bobcats after a Friday night contest at the top-ranked UConn Huskies. Michigan State opened the season with a loss at Old Dominion before rallying to defeat Kent State in overtime on Sunday, 3-2. Isa van der Weij, Aisha Osinga and Kelsey Keener each have goals this season to pace the offense. In goal, Jade Arundell sports a 1.92 GAA and .714 save percentage.
Honorable Mention
Goalkeeper Hannah Teicher (Bethesda, Maryland) was named to the honorable mention list for this week's BIG EAST Weekly Awards after earning her first career victory against Vermont. Teicher recorded six saves and anchored a Bobcats defense that turned away all seven penalty corners in the second half.
Winner, Winner Chicken Dinner
Valerie Perkins (Mohegan Lake, New York) put home the game-winning goal for the Bobcats early in the second half for her first goal of the 2018 season. Perkins' goal was the fifth of her career after a three-goal, seven-point season in 2017.
First of Her Career
Freshman Makayla Adams (Sweet Valley, Pennsylvania) scored the first Quinnipiac goal of the 2018 season and first of her career. Adams tipped home a pass from Ines Ruiz Martinez (Madrid, Spain) early in the first half to put the Bobcats on top of the Catamounts.
Getting it Done
Ines Ruiz Martinez has been productive on both sides of the field for the Bobcats through the first two games of the season. She recorded a defensive save against Boston College in the season-opener before recording her first point of the season with her helper on Adams' goal at Vermont.
New Member of the Squad
Head coach Becca Main announced the addition of former Quinnipiac captain Michelle Federico to the coaching staff as a volunteer assistant. Federico was the second-leading scorer on the Bobcats last season before graduating in December. Off the field, Federico was a four-time member of the NFHCA National Academic Squad and was a member of SAAC.
Preseason Honors
Elisa Ruiz Martinez was named to the 2018 Preseason All-BIG EAST team, rewarding her for an impressive 2017 season in which she scored two goals and tallied three assists for seven points. In conference play, she had a goal and an assist for three points as one of Quinnipiac's top players in just their second season in the BIG EAST.
Bobkittens
This year's Quinnipiac squad features 12 newcomers to its 24-player team, including 11 freshmen and one graduate student player. This talented incoming class is Quinnipiac's first full recruiting class since joining the BIG EAST for the 2016 season.
New Coach in the Ranks
Head coach Becca Main made a splash in coaching circles as she hired three-time national champion Nina Klein after Klein wrapped up a four-year playing career with the UConn Huskies. She backstopped UConn to her third national championship in 2018 as the Huskies completed just the sixth perfect season in NCAA Division I Field Hockey history. Klein was a three-time NFHCA All-Mideast Region selection as well as having earned the 2017 NFHCA Division I National Scholar-Athlete of the Year after earning the highest GPA of any NFHCA All-American.
