HAMDEN, Conn. - Four members of the Quinnipiac women's golf team earned spots on the 2017-18 Women's Golf Coaches Association's All-American Scholar team, which was announced this week.
Senior Abby Chase, junior Julia Kemmling, sophomore Alexandra Sazhin and freshman Queenie Lai were each chosen to the WGCA All-American Scholar team. Chase and Lai both had the additional distinction of ending the 2017-18 year with a perfect 4.0 GPA.
Chase graduated a year early from Quinnipiac and will head back home to attend the University of Wisconsin for graduate school in the fall. She was the conference player of the year at Beaver Dam High School in Wisconsin and an honorable mention all-state selection before joining the Bobcats. She shot a career-best 77 at the Seahawk Invitational.
Kemmling served as a team co-captain this season and had a stroke average of 79.20 on the year. Her +7.36 average round this year ranked as the seventh-best in program history. She is a two-time first-team All-MAAC selection, and finished 16th at this year's MAAC Championships, her third top-20 finish at the MAACs in her first three seasons with the Bobcats, including a fifth-place finish as a freshman.
Sazhin set a new program record for birdies in a season this year with 52, breaking the old mark of 44. Her +5.80 average this year also ranks second in school history, while she became the first player in program history to have two rounds of par or better in the same season. She earned both the MAAC Player of the Year and the MAAC Rookie of the Year Awards as a freshman last year.
Lai had an immediate impact on the Bobcats in her freshman season, setting a new program record by averaging a +5.56 over her 25 rounds on the year. She was named the MAAC Women's Golfer of the Week three times on the year, and finished seventh at the MAAC Championships to earn all-conference honors.
As a team, the Bobcats had an historically strong campaign, earning the program's highest ever national ranking (171, up 40 spots from a year ago). The team's average score of 310.12 was also over 10 strokes better than the program's previous best of 320.88, while its 197 birdies eclipsed the old high-water mark by 31.
