HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team will head to Rider University for the two-day Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships on Saturday and Sunday.
The Bobcats will look to build on their success from the indoor season, when they finished two points ahead of Rider to finish in second place, their highest-ever finish. The task will be a little tougher in the outdoor season, as two of Quinnipiac's top distance runners (Emily Wolff and Kaleigh Roberts) are redshirting this spring for some extra training in a bid to qualify for nationals next year and won't be available this weekend. They picked up valuable points at the MAAC Indoor Championships.
This weekend will mark the final MAAC Championship event for senior hurdler/sprinter Jessica Lee, who has chalked up a long list of league titles and awards in her career. She won three MAAC titles in the indoor season this year (60-meter run, 60-meter hurdles, 200-meter run) on her way to earning the Most Outstanding Track Performer Award. In the outdoor season, Lee is the defending MAAC champion in the 100-meter hurdles, setting a meet record on her way to qualifying for the NCAA Regionals last year, the third athlete in program history to qualify for nationals.
Junior Carly Timpson will also look to repeat history after being named the MAAC Outstanding Field Performer at last year's outdoor championships. She earned that distinction after finishing first in the high jump and second in the hammer throw last year. This winter, she took home another high jump title at the MAAC Indoor Championships and is one of the favorites to win the event this weekend.
Both hurdles events should see the Bobcats have contenders for the gold, as junior Marlo Wehrer and senior Christina Barbaro are among the top athletes in the 400-meter hurdles. Wehrer qualified for the ECAC Championships with a school-record 1:00.68 at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic in April, breaking the mark that Barbaro set at last year's MAAC Championships. Senior Leah Pfrommer is also coming off an ECAC-qualifying performance at the Yale Springtime Invitational, where she broke her own school record in the long jump.
The Quinnipiac throwers have also had a strong spring, setting new personal bests. Senior Mackenzie Merkel broke 40 meters in the discus at Auburn to move into second place in school history, while juniors Emily Dryzgula (javelin) and Michaela Mendygral (discus, shot put) stand in second place in Quinnipiac annals in their top events.
The Bobcats' second-place finish in the MAAC Indoor Championships was in large part due to their depth across the board, as they were the only women's program to earn points in every event (team champion Monmouth did not have a scorer in the 3000 meters). Here is a list of Quinnipiac's point-scorers from the MAAC Indoors:
