HAMDEN, Conn. — For the second time in program history, the Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team will send two representatives to the NCAA East Regionals in Tampa, Florida this weekend.
Due to weather concerns in the Tampa area, the schedule has been revised with earlier competition times. Junior Carly Timpson will compete in the high jump on Thursday at 2 p.m. and senior Jessica Lee opens in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
Lee will make her second straight appearance in the NCAA East Regional in the 100-meter hurdles after finishing 39th in the event last year. Timpson, meanwhile, will be making her first appearance in the NCAAs for the Bobcats in the high jump. The last time the Bobcats had two teammates in the NCAA Regionals was 2007, when Jenna Nechamen and Erin O'Connell qualified in the 800 and 5000, respectively.
Lee will be the 26th seed out of the 48 participants in the 100-meter hurdles in the East Regional, a big jump from a year ago when she qualified as the No. 44 seed and outperformed her seed by finishing 39th. She ran her fastest time of the spring at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic on April 7, finishing in a school-record time of 13.27, the latest in a long line of school records she has set in her career. Lee just missed qualifying for nationals in the indoor season with a school-record 8.18 in the 60-meter hurdles, which placed her 19th nationally, three spots shy of being one of the 16 to qualify for nationals.
Timpson becomes the sixth athlete in program history to advance to NCAA Regional competition, joining Lee, Nechamen, O'Connell, Shameal Samuels (2016) and All-American Katie Gwyther (2006). Timpson had her top jump of the season of 1.73 meters at the MAAC Championships to finish in first place for the second year in a row. The 1.73-meter mark was a school record for the outdoor season, just behind her personal record of 1.74 meters, which was set during the indoor season this winter. Timpson was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer at the MAAC Outdoor Championships as a sophomore in 2017.
The top 12 qualifiers from the NCAA East and West Regionals will advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championships from June 6-9 in Eugene, Oregon.
