PRINCETON, N.J. — For the second year in a row, senior Jessica Lee captured the 100-meter hurdles title at the ECAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for Quinnipiac, crossing the line in 13.53 to finish in first place on Sunday afternoon at Princeton University.
Lee defended her title by qualifying with the fastest time in the prelims (13.79) and then running a 13.53 in the finals to win by a margin of .19 over Sara Gardner of Rider. A year ago, Lee won the same event in a time of 13.76 on her way to qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals.
Heading into the final weekend of qualifications, Lee stood in excellent shape in 29th place in the East Region (and 43rd nationally) with her top time this season of 13.27, which she ran at the Auburn Tiger Track Classic on April 7. The top 48 qualifiers from each region are invited to the NCAA Regionals, and if her time holds up through the final weekend, she will take part in the opening round of the regionals in Tampa on Friday, May 25.
Lee also won the ECAC 60-meter hurdles title during the indoor season in March with a time of 8.25, the second straight year she won that championship as well (after winning in 8.42 seconds a year ago). Her title at Princeton on Sunday marks her fourth ECAC individual hurdles championship in the last two years, combining both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Junior Carly Timpson tied for fourth in the high jump at the ECAC Championships, but wasn't able to build on her personal best of 1.73 meters from earlier this season. That mark had her tied for 42nd in the East Region heading into the weekend, on the cusp of her first NCAA Regionals qualification.
Junior Marlo Wehrer had a strong effort in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing 11th out of 36 runners in her final race of the season with a time of 1:01.82. Wehrer set a school record in the event earlier this spring with a 1:00.68 and will head into her senior season looking to qualify for the NCAA Regionals.
Senior Christina Barbaro closed out her career in the 400-meter hurdles as well (1:05.21) after earning a qualification for the second year in a row, while senior Mackenzie Merkel competed in the discus after earning her first career qualification with a school-record throw of 43.62 at last weekend's MAAC Championships.
