HAMDEN, Conn. — For the second straight game this week, the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team found itself in a 5-0 hole and dug almost all the way out of it before coming up short, as it dropped an 8-7 home decision to Marist on Saturday afternoon at Quinnipiac Lacrosse Stadium.
With the win, Marist remains perfect in the MAAC at 3-0 and improves to 7-4 overall, while the Bobcats slip to 4-7 overall and 1-3 in league play.
On Wednesday, Quinnipiac trailed 5-0 at the half to Iona and came all the way back to within 8-7 with 1:11 left before the Gaels scored with two seconds left on the clock to make the final score 9-7. This time around, the Bobcats barely avoided the same 5-0 score at the half, as junior Allison Kuhn scored with just four seconds on the clock to make the score 5-1 at the break.
Marist scored the first goal of the second half, but sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski and sophomore midfielder Brianna Fitzgerald both scored goals to close to within 6-3 with 21:41 remaining. After the teams alternated goals for the next 20 minutes, Bobinski scored her second with 2:47 left to bring the Bobcats within 8-6.
Kuhn then scored her third goal with 56 seconds on the clock to make the score 8-7 and give the Bobcats one last chance. In the same situation against Iona, the Gaels won the draw control and killed the final 1:11, but this time Kuhn won it in the circle and sprinted into the offensive end. She had a good look from 10 yards out to tie the score, but Marist goalie Delaney Galvin was able to make a clean save and the Red Foxes were able to clear the ball and run out the final seconds.
Galvin was a thorn in Quinnipiac's side in the first half, making nine saves, several from close distance, before allowing her first goal with four seconds left in the half. She finished the game with 14 saves to get the win, while senior Kyle Larkin also had 14 for the Bobcats. Marist had a narrow 31-29 edge in shots for the game and scored four of its eight goals on free-position shots, compared to one for the Bobcats. Kuhn finished with three goals to lead all scorers, while Lauren Mazza and Camille Renaud had two apiece for Marist. Senior defender Kiera Kelly led Quinnipiac with six caused turnovers, while freshman defender Maddy Lamagna led with four ground balls.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Fairfield for a 3 p.m. contest.
