FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Junior attack Allison Kuhn had five goals, including four in a row to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 10-7 lead, but the Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team was unable to hang on as Fairfield rallied to take an 11-10 overtime win from the Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon at Rafferty Stadium.
With the loss, the Bobcats slip to 5-8 overall and 1-4 in the MAAC, with the last three losses coming by a combined four goals (9-7 to Iona, 8-7 to Marist, 11-10 in overtime to Fairfield). The Stags, who got the tying goal with 1:45 left in regulation and the winning goal 2:20 into overtime, both from Taylor Mitchell, improve to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in the MAAC with the win.
Kuhn brought Quinnipiac even at 7-7 with her second goal of the game with 1:55 left in the first half, which is where the score stood heading into intermission. She then scored three times less than five minutes apart in the second half, tallying unassisted goals with 23:30 left and 22:01 left, and then capping off her run with 18:45 on the clock on a feed from sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski to give the Bobcats their largest lead at 10-7.
Fairfield, though, took advantage of two Quinnipiac yellow cards to score with the Bobcats shorthanded, the second of which tied the score with 1:45 off the stick of Mitchell. Sophomore Brianna Fitzgerald won the ensuing draw control to give Quinnipiac a chance to win in regulation, but Bobinski had her shot saved and Fairfield was able to clear the ball from danger.
Quinnipiac had a golden chance in overtime as Fairfield was given an early yellow card, but the Bobcats had a turnover and Fairfield drew a yellow card to get back to even strength. Right off the ensuing free position shot, Mitchell was able to put home the game-winner to give the Stags the 11-10 comeback win.
Mitchell also had back-to-back goals in the first half to give Fairfield its largest lead at 6-3, before Quinnipiac went on a 7-1 run spanning both halves. Freshman Avery Drouin and juniors Julia Corrice and Ellie Swenson scored in succession to knot it up at 6-6, and after the Stags went back in front 7-6, Kuhn tied it heading into the break.
Fairfield held a 31-17 edge in shots but the Bobcats were opportunistic on theirs to stay in the game, putting 15 of their 17 on target with 10 going in. Senior goalie Kyle Larkin had 12 saves, eight in the second half, including four in a row with the score holding at 10-9, to almost help the Bobcats hold on for the win.
Quinnipiac will be back in action on Saturday for its final home game of the season when it entertains Canisius for an 11 a.m. contest, which will also be Senior Day for the program's three seniors who are concluding their careers: Larkin, Kiera Kelly and Caitlinn Riedell.
