HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team will try to get back on the winning track on the road when it faces local rival Fairfield for a 3 p.m. contest on Wednesday at Rafferty Stadium. The Bobcats fell twice last week at home to Iona (9-7) and Marist (8-7) after falling behind 5-0 in both contests and coming back to within 8-7 in the final two minutes before coming up short.
LAST TIME OUT (MARIST 8, QUINNIPIAC 7)
Quinnipiac fell into a 5-0 hole for the second straight game and had a chance to tie it in the final minute before falling 8-7 on Saturday afternoon against Marist. The Bobcats didn't get on the scoreboard until just four seconds were left in the first half, when Allison Kuhn found the net for the first of her game-high three goals. Kuhn finished off her hat trick with 56 seconds left to get Quinnipiac within a single goal, and then won the ensuing draw control to give the Bobcats a chance to tie, but her shot was saved and the Red Foxes were able to kill off the rest of the clock. Senior goalie Kyle Larkin had 14 saves to help keep the Bobcats in striking distance.
LAST YEAR vs. FAIRFIELD
Quinnipiac hung tough for a while and was within 5-3 late in the first half, but Fairfield scored 11 goals in a row to pull away and take a 17-5 win last year at Yale's Reese Stadium. Alex Fehmel had six goals and Riley Hellstein had five for the Stags, while current sophomore Ashley Bobinski led the Bobcats with two goals.
KELLY AMONG BEST IN NATION
Heading into this week's play, senior defender Kiera Kelly leads the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.42) and leads all defenders in ground balls per game (4.67), ranking second overall to USC goalie Gussie Johns (5.07). Peyton LeConte of Saint Francis (Pa.) is the only other player in the nation who even ranks in the top 10 in both categories, and she places seventh in caused turnovers and 10th in ground balls. Kelly, who was the program's first-ever first-team All-ECAC selection a year ago, vaulted up the statistical charts after an eight-ground ball, seven-caused turnover performance at Monmouth on March 24, which earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Award. She became the second MAAC weekly honoree of the season for the Bobcats, joining sophomore Ashley Bobinski (see below).
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and added four assists, surpassing her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists). Bobinski leads the Bobcats with 40 points on 24 goals and 16 assists.
CONTI EARNS MAAC STUDENT-ATHLETE HONOR
Junior defender Aubrey Conti earned the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on April 4, an award that goes to an athlete who excels in the classroom and who had an impact performance over the previous week. Conti, who carries a 3.9 GPA as an accounting major, helped the Quinnipiac defense hold Manhattan to only six goals in an 11-6 win on Saturday, including just two in the second half.
BOBCAT LEADERBOARD
Sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski leads the Bobcats in goals (24), assists (16) and points (40). Junior attack Allison Kuhn is second in goals (22) and points (26), while freshman midfielder Avery Drouin is second with eight assists. Defensively, Kiera Kelly leads Quinnipiac in ground balls (56) and caused turnovers (41), while Brianna Fitzgerald has the lead with 22 draw controls, two ahead of Kuhn. Senior goalkeeper Kyle Larkin has 104 saves and a .533 save percentage in goal.
STRONG BUILDING BLOCKS
As a new head coach last season, Tanya Kotowicz was fortunate to have a couple of strong building blocks in her first recruiting class. Attack Ashley Bobinski and defender Haley Everding were both chosen to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2017 after emerging as starters in their first campaigns. Both have continued in their starting roles this season, with Bobinski leading the team in scoring and Everding playing alongside Kiera Kelly to anchor the Bobcats' defense.
A LITTLE LESS DRAMA
So far this season, the Bobcats have been on the winning end of some convincing final scores, including an 18-9 win over Gardner-Webb on March 17. A year ago, Quinnipiac did not have much experience milking leads, as all four of their wins were by one goal, including a 10-9 win over Central Connecticut in Tanya Kotowicz's debut.
