WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — On the heels of a spectacular indoor season this winter, senior Jessica Lee wasted no time having an impact in the spring, taking first place and breaking her own school record with a 13.52 in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday afternoon on the second day of the Colonial Relays, hosted by William & Mary.
In her first race of the spring, Lee finished just ahead of her previous school record of 13.56, which she set last spring at the Penn Relays. Lee was last in action in the winter season, when she won MAAC Championships in three different events (60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, 200 meters) in February and earned an ECAC Championship in the 60-meter hurdles in March, while finishing the indoor season ranked 22nd in the nation in the event after her school-record 8.18 at Ocean Breeze.
Lee wasn't the only strong performer in the hurdles on Friday, as junior Marlo Wehrer finished second in her heat and third overall out of 58 competitors in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:01.96, earning six points for the Bobcats and qualifying her for the ECAC Championships. Wehrer was just behind per personal best of 1:01.34 set last year, which ranks second in Quinnipiac history. Meanwhile, a day after a strong fourth-place finish in the hammer throw, junior Carly Timpson scored again by finishing sixth in the high jump, clearing 1.65 meters.
In the 100 meters, freshman Abby Frank ran a 12.47 in her first collegiate competition in the event, debuting in the sixth spot all-time in Quinnipiac history, while finishing 25th out of 70 runners. Frank also won her heat in the 200 with a 25.81, leaving her just .02 away from cracking Quinnipiac's top 10. Junior Maria Ricalton moved into the top 10 in Quinnipiac history in the 3000-meter steeplechase, finishing 11:27.26 to move into eighth in program annals.
After Wehrer earned her third-place finish, the Bobcats stood in a tie for second place in the team scoring with 24 points, two off the lead, including the 10 from Lee and the eight points earned by Timpson in two different events. Quinnipiac stayed at 24 points and finished the day tied for ninth place out of 39 teams that have scored in the first two days. Villanova leads with 38.5 points, followed by Stony Brook with 36 points.
Quinnipiac concludes the Colonial Relays tomorrow morning with the triple jump, shot put and discus, as well as the relay events.
