POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — Senior Brian Feldman and freshman Jake Tomsik each scored five goals as the Quinnipiac men's lacrosse team got its offense clicking in its final tune-up before the conference tournament with a 17-14 road win over Marist on Saturday afternoon at Tenney Stadium.
With the win, the Bobcats improve to 9-5 overall and 6-0 in the MAAC, their second undefeated MAAC regular season in the last three years after also pulling off the feat in 2016. Quinnipiac went on to win both conference tournament games in 2016, including a semifinal win over Canisius, which the Bobcats will open MAAC Tournament play against this year on Thursday at Monmouth.
Quinnipiac came out of the gate ready to play, as Feldman scored just 26 seconds into the contest, the first of seven goals the Bobcats scored in the first quarter. Junior attack Foster Cuomo (three goals, three assists) and Feldman each had two first-quarter goals, and senior midfielder Ryan Lawson put the Bobcats ahead 7-3 with 55 seconds left in the quarter.
Feldman and Tomsik each capped off their hat tricks in the second quarter to help Quinnipiac build a 10-6 lead with 4:03 left in the half, but Marist was able to close within 10-7 at the break, and then got to within one goal twice in the third quarter, the second coming with 3:37 left in the third to cut the Bobcats' lead to 12-11. Tomsik closed out the third with a goal, and the Bobcats opened the fourth quarter with goals from Cuomo and junior attack Mike Fletcher to make the score 15-11. Marist wasn't able to threaten the rest of the way.
Senior Will Vitelli won 20-of-34 face-offs to help the Bobcats control possession, while senior long-stick midfielder Adam Bellamy had nine ground balls. Sophomore goalie Joe Zukauskas had 10 saves in goal for Quinnipiac.
The Bobcats' undefeated MAAC regular season is a bit of redemption for the 14-member senior class, which won the MAAC title as sophomores and won the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament game, but then did not make the conference or NCAA tournaments as juniors. Quinnipiac finished one game ahead of Detroit Mercy this year in the final regular season standings to win the regular season title outright.
The MAAC semifinals will be on Thursday at Monmouth, with Detroit Mercy and Monmouth facing off in the other half of the bracket. The two winners will meet on Saturday morning in a game televised on ESPNU.
