HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac outdoor track and field team will compete in two events this weekend, with the majority of the team heading to Long Island to participate in the Stony Brook Invitational on Saturday.
Four Bobcats, though, will travel further south to compete in the Virginia Challenge. Senior Jessica Lee (100-meter hurdles), senior Christina Barbaro (400-meter hurdles), junior Marlo Wehrer (400-meter hurdles) and junior Carly Timpson (high jump) will all look to build on their personal bests as they keep an eye on qualifying for the NCAA Regionals later this spring.
Lee qualified for last year's regionals and took a big step toward going back again this year, trimming a quarter of a second off her top time with a 13.27 at Auburn's Tiger Track Classic. She placed second in the field among NCAA competitors, behind only Cortney Jones of Florida State (13.03). Wehrer, meanwhile, earned an ECAC qualification in the 400-meter hurdles at Auburn, setting a new school record with a 1:00.68.
In the throwing events last weekend, senior Mackenzie Merkel (pictured) threw 40.99 meters in the discus to shatter her previous personal best of 38.63 by over two meters, while breaking the 40-meter plateau for the first time. She stands in second place in Quinnipiac history in the discus, behind only Mikah Maples (43.09 meters).
Sophomore Kaitlin Bakas finished fifth in the 5000 with a 17:36.71, which moves her into the top 10 in Quinnipiac history (10th). Junior Maria Ricalton came in fifth out of 30 competitors in the 3000 with a 10:16.10, while Timpson was fourth out of 20 in the high jump, tying her own outdoor record at 1.70 meters, just behind her overall record of 1.74, set indoors.
After this weekend's events, the Bobcats will have one more tune-up before the postseason, when they travel down the road to participate in the Yale Springtime Invitational on Sunday, April 29. After that, it is on to the MAAC Championships, which will be held on May 5-6 at Rider.
