HAMDEN, Conn. — Senior defender Kiera Kelly broke the Quinnipiac record for most ground balls in a career with 210 and the single-season caused turnover record with 48 on her Senior Day, but the Bobcats were unable to dig out of an 8-2 halftime hole to defending MAAC Champion Canisius and fell 12-7 on Saturday afternoon in the team's home finale at Quinnipiac Lacrosse Stadium.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 5-9 on the season and 1-5 in the MAAC with two road games left to play. Canisius improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Kelly, who already held the school record for most caused turnovers in a career, added a second entry in the record books when she picked up her fifth ground ball of the game with just over 10 minutes left to give her 209, passing the old mark of 208 held by Colleen Dooley '01. Kelly finished with six caused turnovers and six ground balls, increasing her caused turnover total to 48 this season, setting a new single-season Quinnipiac record in that category, passing the old mark set by Vanessa Miranda in 2004.
However, Canisius was able to take control of the game by outscoring Quinnipiac 6-0 over the final 17:35 of the first half to take an 8-2 lead into the break. After junior Jenna Henningsen scored her second goal for the Bobcats to tie the score 2-2 with 24:11 left in the half, Jourdan Roemer scored and then assisted on the next three Golden Griffin tallies on her way to a nine-point afternoon (four goals, five assists).
The Bobcats regrouped at the half and clawed back as close as 10-7 on a goal from freshman Sydney Cowell with 5:48 to go, but the Bobcats couldn't come all the way back, as Canisius scored the game's final two goals to seal it.
Sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski and Henningsen each had two goals for the Bobcats to lead the offense, while junior attack Allison Kuhn had a goal and two assists. Jen Reininger had three goals for the Golden Griffins while Rebecca VanLaeken had 13 saves in goal, several of which were from close range.
In a pregame ceremony, the Bobcats honored Kelly and the three other graduating seniors, attack Loren Antonacci, midfielder Caitlinn Riedell and goalie Kyle Larkin.
