HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team will look to stay alive in its quest for a second straight MAAC Tournament berth when it heads to Siena for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday afternoon.
MAAC UPDATE
The Bobcats enter their final week of the regular season with an uphill battle to earn their way into the MAAC Tournament, but it is still a battle which could be won. Quinnipiac is 1-5 in the conference with two games left on the road, against 0-5 Siena and 4-1 Niagara. The Bobcats would likely need to win both to get in, but the two teams they need to pass to get into sixth place (2-3 Iona, 2-4 Manhattan) both close out the season with teams ahead of them in the standings. Quinnipiac would lose a head-to-head tiebreaker with Iona and win one with Manhattan, while a three-way tie would create complicated scenarios, and a win over Niagara would be a big help in giving the Bobcats an advantage.
SENIOR DAY
Prior to last Saturday's final home game, Quinnipiac honored its seniors who are concluding their careers this spring: Caitlinn Riedell of Garden City, New York; Kyle Larkin of Brightwaters, New York; and defender Kiera Kelly of West Islip, New York. This year's seniors were a key part of helping the Bobcats qualify for their first MAAC Tournament last spring.
LAST TIME OUT (CANISIUS 12, QUINNIPIAC 7)
Quinnipiac trailed 8-2 at the half and rallied to close to within 10-7 in the final minutes, but was unable to complete the comeback as it fell 12-7 to defending MAAC champion Canisius on Saturday. Kiera Kelly had six caused turnovers and six ground balls to lead the defensive effort for the Bobcats, setting a new career record in career ground balls (210) and a new single-season record for caused turnovers (48).
CLOSING THE GAP
The 12-7 defeat to Canisius on Saturday was yet another indication of how much progress Quinnipiac has made under second-year head coach Tanya Kotowicz. A year ago, the Bobcats lost 10-4 to Marist in the regular season, 17-5 to Fairfield and 22-4 to Canisius, a combined margin of defeat of 36 goals in the regular season. This season, Quinnipiac lost 8-7 to Marist, 11-10 in overtime to Fairfield, and 12-7 to Canisius, a combined margin of only seven. Out of conference, the Bobcats fell 21-3 to Yale last year and just 13-8 this season.
KELLY AMONG BKiera KellyON
Heading into this week's play, senior defender Kiera Kelly is leading the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.43) and leading all defenders in ground balls per game (4.43), ranking second overall to USC goalie Gussie Johns (5.07). Peyton LeConte of Saint Francis (Pa.) is the only other player in the nation who even ranks in the top 10 in both categories, and she places sixth in caused turnovers and 10th in ground balls. Kelly, who was the program's first-ever first-team All-ECAC selection a year ago, vaulted up the statistical charts after an eight-ground ball, seven-caused turnover performance at Monmouth on March 24, which earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Award. She became the second MAAC weekly honoree of the season for the Bobcats, joining sophomore Ashley Bobinski (see below).
KELLY INTO THE RECORD BOOKS
Senior defender Kiera Kelly has just about finished rewriting the defensive record books at Quinnipiac. In Saturday's game against Canisius, she became the new career record holder in ground balls with 210, passing the old mark of 208 set by Colleen Dooley '01. Kelly also added the single-season record for caused turnovers (48), passing the old mark of 45 set by Vanessa Miranda in 2004. Kelly already set the career caused turnover record earlier this season (113, held by Miranda) and is now at 144.
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and added four assists, surpassing her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists). Bobinski leads the Bobcats with 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists.
CONTI EARNS MAAC STUDENT-ATHLETE HONOR
Junior defender Aubrey Conti was named the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on April 4, an award which goes to an athlete who excels in the classroom and who had an impact performance over the previous week. Conti, who carries over a 3.9 GPA as an accounting major, helped the Quinnipiac defense hold Manhattan to only six goals in an 11-6 win on March 31, including two in the second half.
