HAMDEN, Conn. — The Quinnipiac women's lacrosse team will look to turn the table after a series of nail-biting losses when it welcomes defending MAAC champion Canisius on Saturday for an 11 a.m. contest in its final home game of the season, which is also Senior Day. The Bobcats will honor the three seniors who are concluding their careers this season: defender Kiera Kelly, goalie Kyle Larkin and defender/attack Caitlinn Riedell.
MAAC UPDATE
The Bobcats enter the weekend needing a big win to turn their fortunes around after starting 1-4 through their first five MAAC contests. Their last three losses have been by a combined four goals (9-7 vs. Iona, 8-7 vs. Marist, 11-10 in overtime vs. Fairfield), and Iona scored an insurance goal with two seconds left to make that final a two-goal margin. Quinnipiac may need to win out and finish 4-4 to qualify for the six-team MAAC Tournament, since it does not have the tiebreaker with Iona, which is currently 2-3 in the MAAC and in sixth place, one game ahead of the Bobcats..
SENIOR DAY
Prior to the game, Quinnipiac will honor its three seniors who are concluding their careers this spring: defender/attack Riedell of Garden City, New York; goalie Larkin of Brightwaters, New York; and defender Kelly of West Islip, New York. This year's seniors were a key part of helping the Bobcats qualify for their first MAAC Tournament last spring.
LAST TIME OUT (FAIRFIELD 11, QUINNIPIAC 10 – OT)
Quinnipiac nearly pulled out a huge road win on Wednesday, building a 10-7 lead in the second half, but Fairfield was able to come back and tie the score with 1:45 in regulation and then get the win 2:20 into the overtime. Bobcats junior Allison Kuhn scored four straight goals, the first of which tied the score 7-7 going into halftime, and the last of which made the score 10-7 with just over 18 minutes left. Quinnipiac nearly held on the rest of the way, as senior goalie Kyle Larkin had four straight saves with the score 10-9 before the Stags finally found the equalizer. Larkin finished the day with 12 saves, while Kuhn had a game-high five goals.
CLOSING THE GAP
The loss to Fairfield on Wednesday was a frustrating one for the Bobcats, as they have now dropped their last three MAAC games by a combined four goals. But the defeat was yet another indication of how much progress Quinnipiac has made under second-year head coach Tanya Kotowicz. A year ago, the Bobcats lost 10-4 to Marist in the regular season (and 17-10 in the MAAC Tournament) and 17-5 to Fairfield. This season, Quinnipiac has lost one-goal games to both teams in the last week. Out of conference, the Bobcats fell 21-3 to Yale last year and just 13-8 this season. The Canisius game on Saturday will be another measuring stick, as the Golden Griffins defeated Quinnipiac 22-4 last season on their way to a MAAC title.
KELLY AMONG BEST IN NATION
Heading into this week's play, senior defender Kiera Kelly was leading the nation in caused turnovers per game (3.42) and leading all defenders in ground balls per game (4.67), ranking second overall to USC goalie Gussie Johns (5.07). Peyton LeConte of Saint Francis (Pa.) is the only other player in the nation who even ranks in the top 10 in both categories, and she places seventh in caused turnovers and 10th in ground balls. Kelly, who was the program's first-ever first-team All-ECAC selection a year ago, vaulted up the statistical charts after an eight-ground ball, seven-caused turnover performance at Monmouth on March 24, which earned her the MAAC Defensive Player of the Week Award. She became the second MAAC weekly honoree of the season for the Bobcats, joining sophomore Ashley Bobinski (see below).
BOBINSKI NAMED MAAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
After her nine-point performance in a March 17 win over Gardner-Webb, sophomore attack Ashley Bobinski earned the MAAC Offensive Player of the Week Award. Bobinski scored on all five of her shots and added four assists, surpassing her previous career high of eight points, which she set earlier this season against Saint Francis, Pa. (six goals, two assists). Bobinski leads the Bobcats with 42 points on 24 goals and 18 assists.
CONTI EARNS MAAC STUDENT-ATHLETE HONOR
Junior defender Aubrey Conti was named the MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, an award which goes to an athlete who excels in the classroom and who had an impact performance over the previous week. Conti, who carries over a 3.9 GPA as an accounting major, helped the Quinnipiac defense hold Manhattan to only six goals in an 11-6 win on Saturday, including two in the second half.
