NOTES
- Taylor Luciani retired the first 11 batters he faced before hitting back-to-back batters with two outs in the bottom of the fourth
- Mickey Dugan got the first hit for Gardner-Webb with two outs in the fifth when he had an infield single to third base. He stole second base, and a walk put runners on first and second, before Luciani escaped the mini-jam with a strikeout.
- Luciani worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning, getting the final out of the frame with his seventh strikeout, but left the game to start the seventh to restrict his early-season workload.
- The Bobcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, when senior Julius Saporito led off with a single and came around to score
- Senior Ben Gibson sacrificed Saporito to second with a bunt back to the pitcher, and senior Anthony Cruz followed with a single to shortstop which was misplayed to allow Saporito to come home from third with the game's first run.
- The Bobcats also threatened in the first inning when sophomore Evan Vulgamore and junior Brian Moskey had back-to-back two-out singles.
- After getting four hits in the first two innings off of Gardner Webb starter Landon Mitchell, the Bobcats were held to just an infield single from sophomore Dylan Lutz to lead off the sixth over Mitchell's final five innings, Mitchell did not allow an earned run or a walk and struck out four in seven innings of work.
- Dugan gave Gardner-Webb the lead with a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh and came home on a double from Corey Howard.
- Gardner-Webb added two more runs in the eighth inning on back-to-back solo homers from Justin Kunz and Chandler Redmond.
- Lutz, Vulgamore and Saporito all added their second singles of the game in the ninth inning to load the bases with two outs and bring the tying run to the plate, but Will Sellers was able to finish off the save by getting Nelson to fly out to right field.
- The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bobcats, who won all three games of the William & Mary series last week. Gardner-Webb, meanwhile, won its sixth in a row to improve to 8-1
