3/19/2018 8:24:00 PM | Women's Basketball
STORRS, Conn. - The Quinnipiac women's basketball team stayed within striking distance of No. 1 Connecticut for most of the first half, but eventually the Huskies were able to stretch their lead out and take a 71-46 win over the Bobcats on Monday evening in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Gampel Pavilion.
Quinnipiac effectively slowed the game down in the first half, milking the shot clock and turning the ball over only three times in the first 20 minutes, while not allowing the Huskies, who scored 140 points in their opening round win over Saint Francis (Pa.), to get any fast break points. The Bobcats were down 19-9 after the first quarter and had it within 24-16 at the media timeout at the 4:45 mark of the second quarter, before the Huskies stretched their lead to 33-18 at the break.
The loss snaps a school-record 23-game winning streak for the Bobcats, and finishes their season at 28-6. Quinnipiac defeated Miami in Saturday's opening round, giving it three NCAA Tournament wins in the last two seasons, and the Bobcats will have all of their rotation players back again next year, other than starting point guard Carly Fabbri, to try to get back to the NCAA Tournament for a third straight season.
Junior forward Jen Fay led the Bobcats with 12 points, while UConn junior forward Napheesa Collier finished with a game-high 23 points.
