First Bobcat on Opening Night Roster in Program History, Cashman '07 Set for Coaching Debut
MONTREAL, Quebec – Former Quinnipiac men's ice hockey forward Matthew Peca '15 has been named to the NHL's Montreal Canadiens opening night roster, as announced by the organization on Wednesday.
This marks the first time a Quinnipiac men's ice hockey player has been named to an opening night roster. Peca and the Canadiens open the 2018-19 season Wednesday night at the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7 p.m.
Peca signed a two-year deal with the Montreal Canadiens this offseason after spending the past three-plus seasons in the Tampa Bay Lightning organization. He played in 20 NHL games over the past two seasons, recording three goals and four assists for seven points after making his NHL debut on Dec. 28, 2016 against the Canadiens before netting his first career goal on Jan. 3, 2017.
Over parts of the last four seasons, Peca played in 204 games over the past four seasons for the Lightning's AHL Affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, with 34 goals and 100 assists for 134 points.
In his career with Quinnipiac, Peca totaled 143 points in 157 games, scoring 42 goals and recording 101 assists. He ranks fourth in Division I program history in assists and is tied for fifth in points. He is in the top 10 all-time in program history in each category.
NHL Coaching Career Kicks Off Tonight
Former associate head coach and player Reid Cashman '07 makes his NHL coaching debut tonight after he was promoted to assistant coach of the Stanley Cup Champion Washington Capitals this summer. Cashman will work primarily with defenseman for the Capitals.
Washington opens up the season Wednesday night as the Capitals host the Boston Bruins in the first game of the 2018-19 NHL season.
Cashman spent the past two seasons with the Capitals' AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears, before he was promoted by new head coach Todd Reirden.
In his coaching career with Quinnipiac, the Bobcats won 129 games, three Cleary Cups as ECAC Hockey Regular Season Champions, one Whitelaw Cup as ECAC Hockey Tournament Champions and earned two trips to the NCAA Frozen Four.
As a player, Cashman was a three-time All-American and was the only defenseman to rank in the top 20 in scoring in his last two seasons. He concluded his Quinnipiac playing career as the program's all-time leader in assists with 125 and points by a defenseman with 148.
The Quinnipiac men's ice hockey team kicks off the 2018-19 season with an exhibition game Saturday night at 7 p.m. against the University of Prince Edward Island before opening the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Vermont at 7 p.m. The Bobcats' home opener is set for Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. against UConn.
