LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The men's cross country team finished fourth overall at the MAAC Championship on Saturday, Oct. 27. This is the best team finish for the Bobcats since 2014 when the team took 3rd overall.
"Today was the culmination of three years of hard work, and to move from eighth in the conference to fourth is a huge accomplishment," said head coach Josh Glaab. "It is so rare for a group of athletes to come together and have legitimately great performances all on the same day."
Michael Kiernan finished in fourth place overall in the men's 8k with a time of 25:24.5. Tommy Consalvo was not too far behind and took 10th place with a time of 25:40.5. Cam Starr finished in 18th with a time of 25:59.3.
"Mike [Michael Kiernan] had an incredible finish down the last straight away that allowed to us overtake Siena's top athlete Evans Kibet," Glaab explained. "Tommy fought off a mass of six runners to hold on to his spot at tenth. Cam Starr was an incredible surprise to come in as our third athlete. He has been battling injuries throughout the season and this was his first race chance to compete at full capacity, and it led to an absolutely incredible performance."
Jeffrey Venter finished in 25th place with a time of 26:10.7. The next fastest time for the Bobcats was Ben Lanza's 26:39.7 and he finished in 44th place. Matthew Allen took 55th place (26:58.1) and Ryan Ansel was right behind him in 57th place (26:59.9).
"Jeffery Venter had by far his best performance of the season, and I think his finish may have been the best in the conference," Glaab said. "He outkicked at least six athletes in the last hundred and fifty meters. Ben Lanza finished out the scoring by being the consistently tough man he always is."
Joe Lazzaro place in 80th with a time of 27:32.6, and Max Stenslie finished in 85th place with a time of 27:39.6. Jack Hilton finished in 93rd place (27:56.2) and Matthew Burke took 96th place with a time of 28:01.4.
Jacob St. Onge placed 112th with a time of 28:57.1. John McMahon finished in 129th place in 30:13.0.
Iona won their 28th consecutive MAAC title and finished with 35 team points. Siena followed in second with 77 team points, and Monmouth took third with 88 points.
Quinnipiac placed fourth with 101 team points. Manhattan, Marist, Canisius, Fairfield, Niagara and Saint Peter's made up the rest of the team results.
