
No. 9/9 Quinnipiac Women's Ice Hockey Opens 2017-18 Season With 2-1 Win At Maine

ORONO, Maine – Nationally-ranked No. 9/9 Quinnipiac women's ice hockey scored twice in the second period to open the 2017-18 season with a 2-1 win at Maine. Sophomore Abby Cleary (Buffalo, New York) found the net early in the period while junior Randi Marcon (Winnipeg, Manitoba) scored with less than two minutes in the middle frame. The Bobcats' win marks the fourth-straight year in which the Bobcats won their season-opener. Their last opening-night loss came in 2011 to push them to 3-0-3 on the first night of the year over the last six years.

- 18:23 1st Period (0-1): After some chaos in front of the net, Maine ended up with the puck behind the Bobcats' goal before Anna Zikova picked the top right corner of the net following a pass from Michelle Weis.
- 3:38 2nd Period (1-1): Kate McKenzie ripped a shot from the point, and Abby Cleary tipped it past the Maine goalie to tie it at 1-1 early in the second period.
- 18:13 2nd Period (2-1): Randi Marcon cleaned up a rebound off a shot by Cleary from the doorstep and slid the rebound past Maine's goalie to give the Bobcats the one-goal lead heading into the second intermission.
- Cleary's second-career goal goes in the record books as the first goal of the Bobcats' 2017-18 season.
- Kate MacKenzie and Sarah-Eve Coutu-Godbout picked up their first points of the year. Last season, MacKenzie totaled seven goals and seven assists while Coutu-Godbout had four assists to go along with two goals in 22 games.
- Randi Marcon scored the game-winning goal for the Bobcats with just under two minutes to play in the second period. It was Marcon's second game-winner of her career, with her first one coming in the 2016 ECAC Hockey Semifinals on Mar. 5, 2016 in a 2-1 win against St. Lawrence.
- Marcon's goal was assisted by Cleary, giving her the first multi-point game of her career.
- Quinnipiac sophomore goalie Abbie Ives (Bedford Hills, New York) stopped 16 of Maine's 17 shots-on-goal to open the year at 1-0-0, while she also improves to 4-0-1 for her career. In addition, her career save percentage jumps to .974 while she also boasts an all-time goals-against average of 0.38 in seven career games.
- This marks the third-consecutive season in which a Bobcat recorded a multi-point game in the first contest of the regular season. Last season, Quinnipiac had three players: Melissa Samoskevich (1g-1a—2pts), T.T. Cianfarano (2-2-4) and Kenzie Prater (0-2) with multi-point nights against Maine; In 2015-16, it was Cianfarano (0-2—2) and Emma Woods (2-0—2).
- This victory is the 11th straight over the University of Maine. The Black Bears have not defeated the Bobcats since October 8, 2011.
